Updated Aug. 19 with endorsements for all three statewide races.

The Virginia Police Benevolent Association has endorsed the Republican candidates for governor and lieutenant governor and the Democratic candidate for attorney general.

Ken Cuccinelli and E.W. Jackson earned the VPBA’s endorsement on Wednesday after interviews by the group’s board on Aug. 10.

” In the attorney general’s office, we’ve worked with law enforcement across the Commonwealth to crack down on human traffickers, child predators, gang leaders and scam artists. Through that experience, I have gained a firsthand understanding of what our police officers need to more effectively do their jobs,” Cuccinelli said in a campaign news release issued Friday.

Jackson’s opponent, Ralph Northam, was not directly interviewed by the group’s board. Instead, the board spoke to a Northam campaign representative. The Libertarian candidate for governor, Robert Sarvis, also was not interviewed.

For attorney general, the VPBA board endorsed Mark Herring, the Democratic Party’s candidate.

“Mark is committed to making strong, effective law enforcement a priority in his campaign and we look forward to working with him into the future,” Virginia PBA President Joe Woloszyn said in a news release issued Thursday by the campaign. “A vote for Mark Herring is a vote for the men and women of law enforcement and the citizens we serve.”

Herring said he was proud of the support. “I will work to make sure they have the support and the resources they need to protect the public. I’ve had the honor of working closely with law enforcement to help keep Virginians and their families safe,” Herring said.

Herring, as a state senator from Loudoun County, was honored in 2012 by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys for his work to fight domestic violence.
