Today in TV History
“Amos ‘n’ Andy,” which was based on the radio show of the same name, debuted on CBS in 1951. Ongoing protests by civil rights groups such as the NAACP for fostering racial stereotypes resulted in the sitcom being canceled just two seasons into its run. In 1973, NBC premiered summer variety series “The Helen Reddy Show,” which aired for two months.

Ratings Breakdown:
There was little of note on this final Thursday in June, which featured only two networks – ABC and Fox – in originals. CBS finished first in each of the six half-hours care of its encore combination of “The Big Bang Theory” (5.6 rating/10 share), which topped the night, “Two and a Half Men” (4.3/ 8), which has benefited out of Sheldon and Leonard and company all season, and “Person of Interest” (4.4/ 8) and “Elementary” (3.7/ 7).

Moving “Person of Interest” into the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour next fall (out of “NCIS: Los Angeles”) will, no doubt, benefit the evening. But the risk of airing comedies in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour is potentially alienating the viewers accustomed to “Person of Interest.” Unless you are a die-hard fan of Robin Williams, anticipate considerable erosion after the expected ample sampling for “The Crazy Ones.” From a pilot standpoint, two thumbs down.

In season (or series) finale news, Fox reality/competition “Does Someone Have to Go?” exited with a mere 1.9/ 3 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that finished a distant third in the hour with retention out of young demo favorite lead-in “Hell’s Kitchen” (4.1/ 7 from 8-9 p.m.) of only 46 percent. Comparably, “Hell’s Kitchen” should have no trouble dominating the 8 p.m. hour demographically.

Over at ABC, tired “Wipeout” is no longer the summer attraction it once was, with a third-place 2.6/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was 21 percent below failed year-ago occupant “Duets” (3.3/ 6 on 6/28/12). Next on ABC was Canadian drama “Motive,” which perked up to a second-place 3.4/ 6 in the overnights at 9 p.m. followed by established “Rookie Blue,” also from Canada, at an identical 3.4/ 6 (#2) at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, NBC populated the evening with repeats of two episodes of “Parks and Recreation” (#4: avg. 1.4/ 2 from 8-9 p.m.), a one-hour installment of concluded “The Office” (#4: 1.3/ 2 from 9-10 p.m.) and a 10 p.m. edition of “America’s Got Talent” (#3: 2.4/ 4). And The CW aired encores of “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 0.6/ 1) and “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 0.5/ 1), which is moving into the Monday 9 p.m. hour this fall (out of also relocated “Hart of Dixie”).

Two More Sharks on ABC
ABC’s “Shark Tank” will add two new faces into the tank next season: Steve Tisch, Chairman and Executive Vice President of the New York Giants and partner at Escape Artists Productions; and John Paul DeJoria, the co-founder of the Paul Mitchell line of hair products and The Patron Spirits Company. They will join returning sharks Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec, Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran and the “Queen of QVC,” Lori Greiner.

“Shark Tank” will air Fridays at 9 p.m. ET next season, out of relocated sitcom “The Neighbors” (and opposite relocated “Hawaii Five-O” on CBS, “Grimm” on NBC, repeats of new drama “Sleepy Hollow” on Fox, and tired “America’s Next Top Model” on The CW).

CABLE

Ovation to Air “Smash” Encores
Ovation, which describes itself as America’s only arts network, has acquired the off-network rights to recently canceled NBC musical dramedy “Smash.” Thirty-two one-hour episodes were produced in its two-season run, which will begin airing on Ovation on Friday, July 19 at 8 p.m. ET. “Smash” comes from Universal Television in association with DreamWorks Television, and stars Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Katharine McPhee, Christian Borle, Megan Hilty, Jeremy Jordan and Oscar winner Anjelica Huston.

A&E Announces Start Date for “Psychic Tia”
Upcoming A&E reality series “Psychic Tia,” which centers on former New Jersey detective turned celebrity psychic Tia Belle, will debut on Saturday, August 3 with two episodes in the 10 p.m. ET hour. Produced by FremantleMedia North America and developed by Purveyors of Pop (“Real Housewives of Miami,” “Married to Medicine”), “Psychic Tia” will be based from Tia’s New Jersey store “The Craft,” where she shares her skills as both a medium and a psychic with her clients. The executive producers are Matt Anderson (“Bethenny Ever After”), Nate Green (“Real Housewives of New Jersey”) and Cat Rodriguez.

TCM to Present “The Story of Film: An Odyssey”
Turner Classic Movies (TCM), the authority in classic film, will present the U.S. television premiere of documentary series “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” this fall. Written, directed and narrated by critic and filmmaker Mark Cousins, “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” examines the birth and evolution in cinema via 119 films and dozens of short subjects representing 29 countries across six continents. TCM will launch “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” on Monday, September 2 at 10 p.m. ET with additional installments debuting each Monday through December 9.

Films in the 15-week showcase will include D.W. Griffith’s “Intolerance” (1916), Erich von Stroheim’s “Greed” (1924), Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights” (1931), Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” (1941), Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen’s “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952), Nicholas Ray’s “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955), Mike Nichol’s “The Graduate” (1967), Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” (1975) and “Gladiator” from Ridley Scott in 2000.

Netflix Renews “Orange is the New Black”
It has not even debuted yet on the streaming platform. But Netflix has issued a second season renewal for comedy-drama “Orange is the New Black,” with an order for an additional 13 episodes. Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir “Orange Is The New Black: My Year In a Women’s Prison,” “Orange Is the New Black” revolves around a New York woman (Taylor Schilling), who is sent to a women’s federal prison for possessing a suitcase full of drug money. Sentenced to 15 months, she must trade her comfortable life with her fiancé (Jason Biggs) for an orange prison jumpsuit where she meets an unusual group of inmates.

Netflix will rollout the 13-episodes in season one of “Orange is the New Black” on Thursday, July 11 at 12:01 a.m. ET.
