This was the main Voiturette race of the year. The race started 10.30 AM in pouring rain.
To the disappointment of the crowd the Swiss driver Kessler (Maserati) had to retire while in first
position leaving Malaguti (Maserati) to take over the lead. Seaman (MG) was working his way up
from his back row start position, finally to pass Veyron for second place. Then Malaguti got engine
problems and Seaman went on to a sensational win in his 1100cc car against the 1500cc field.
This was the first international victory for the until then almost unknown Seaman.

The first Swiss Grand Prix was held at Bremgarten. The enthusiasm in the city of Bern was
great and the organizers succeeded in making the Grand Prix race to an instant classic.

Stuck took an early command of the race followed by Nuvolari, Chiron and Dreyfus. Chiron was struggling and was passed by Dreyfus.
Nuvolari had to change plugs on lap 28, stopped again on lap 30 to add water but he finally retired on lap 36 with engine troubleSoon
. On the demanding circuit the "Flying Mantuan" was
able to show his great talent, chasing the Auto Union lap after lap with his clearly inferior Maserati
until he got a misfire and had to retire with engine trouble.
The track seemed not to suit the Ferrari Alfas and for the first time that year they found themselves really outclassed.
The race was also a disaster for the Mercedes-Benz team, their cars suffering from brake trouble and problems with the fuel pumps.
Von Brauchitsch was soon out with engine trouble, Caracciola gave up with brake problems and handed over the car to
Geier on lap eight and Fagioli run a low sixth.
With Nuvolari out the hopes for a good Maserati finish was also gone because the rest of the privateers were struggling
far back in the field. It was instead Dreyfus' Bugatti that took over the second place. He was not to hold it, however, for
near the end of the race he had to make a stop for water and Momberger passed him to give Auto Union a 1-2 result.
On the last lap there was a tragedy, as
Team Straight driver Hugh Hamilton, probably because of a defective tire, slid off the road and into the wood, hit a tree and ricocheted into
another tree. Hamilton, perhaps the top British driver at that time, died instantly.

At the start of the race Straight went into the lead and held it for a few laps
but then he was passed by both Comotti (Alfa Romeo) and Étancelin (Maserati). The French driver was, however, forced to
retire with mechanical troubles so Straight went back into second place. But during an extra pitstop he had to see
himself passed by Zehender. So with Ferrari's top drivers Varzi and Chiron away at the Swiss GP, Comotti, who had taken
over the late Moll's place in the team, got the chance to lead home another Ferrari triumph at St. Gaudens. His team mate
Lehoux retired in his last race for Ferrari with a broken valve after having made the fastest lap of the day.

Caracciola back among the winners without taking the flag
|
As a result of the terrible accidents at Monza GP 1933, that cost the lives of Campari, Borzacchini and Czaykowski
the authorities overreacted by reducing the track length from 10 km to 4.3 and filling the track with chicanes.

The Mercedes-Benz team arrived to Monza without von Brauchitsch. After the Swiss GP von Brauchitsch suffered from pain
in his eye and medical tests showed that he in fact had fractured his skull in the Nürburgring accident.
He was sent back to the hospital bed for a ten weeks complete rest. He was not even allowed to listen to the
GP race on radio.
At Monza Nuvolari gave the new Maserati model 6C-34 its debut.
The new car was heavy and all fluid including the brake fluid had to be drained before
the car passed the 750 kg limit. (compare this to Eifelrennen!) This maneuver would be significant for the race results!
After practice ended and the track shut down Fagioli's car was sent to the Milan autostrada.
There Fagioli's mechanic, an ex. motorcycle racer named Hermann Lang, had his first taste of driving a racing
car in 200km/h while running in the new brakes.

When the flag fell Stuck took the lead followed by Fagioli, Varzi and Caracciola. The Mercedes-Benz cars of Henne and Fagioli were soon out with
mechanical problems. Caracciola took his car up to second and Nuvolari was well up with the leaders, having an giant duel
with Varzi (who else?) but soon his brakes began to fade. The drained brake system had not been properly refilled!
At 10 laps the order was Stuck, 20 seconds from Caracciola and 26 from zu Leiningen, who soon had to retire, and Momberger.
After 20 laps Caracciola had closed the gap to 13 seconds and 10 laps later to 10 seconds. But five laps later the
gap was up to 35 seconds the Mercedes driver having problems with his leg. Somehow Caracciola still managed to come back,
closing the gap down to 12 seconds again.
After leading for 59 laps Stuck took the car into the pits. The radiator had burnt his feet and zu Leiningen
took over while Stuck was getting medical care.
Due to the many chicanes the drivers had to take some 1600 corners during the race that took 4 3/4 hours.
Caracciola was the new leader but the constant gear changing and braking was too much for his hip wound and when he
came in for his pit stop on the next lap he almost fainted and had to be lifted from his car. The car was handled over to his team mate
and greatest rival Fagioli.
The track was brutal for the drivers. Comotti was forced to give over to Marioni, later Comotti in his turn took over from Trossi.
After a ten lap rest Stuck took his car back from zu Leiningen and started to try to better his fourth position.
Fagioli had led the second half of the race and went on to his second victory for Mercedes-Benz.
Varzi was going well in second place until he struck gearbox problems and had to retire with 20 laps to go.
Trossi held second place for a while but he fell back when he made a last pitstop leaving over the car to Comotti.
Now it was Stuck's turn to take the second place, one lap behind Fagioli, and he finished in that position.
Nuvolari's brakes had now gone completely and he braked the car with the gearbox alone. Still he did not give up and
forced his car to finish in a honorable fourth place.
Later Rüesch was disqualified as he had run out of fuel on the track and an assistant had met him outside the pit
with a filled can.

In retrospect:
After the race Chiron found to his great surprise that the had been classified 6th, 4 laps behind the winner.
According to the team's unofficial lap table made by a lady whose ability was held in highest regard (most likely
Alice "Baby" Hoffman) Chiron cleary was 4th. As a gentleman, Chiron however did not want to make a protest.
A later control by the Monza time keepers confirmed they had lost a lap earlier and that Chiron indeed was 4th.
As the reversed results were published only several days after the race many books have the preliminary incorrect results.

Auto Union driver Momberger was not able to take part because of arthritis. Norwegian driver Bjørnstad had
taken his Alfa Romeo "Monza" all the way to Spain only to fail the weight-in as the car was found to be too heavy.

Stuck took the early lead but had to retire after only four laps.
The lead was taken over by Caracciola followed by Wimille and Fagioli. The Bugatti team had at last found some
speed on the car and the French driver made a great effort to split the Mercedes cars. Sadly his effort came to
nothing as the Bugatti developed carburettor problems and Wimille had to slow down finally finishing sixth.

Caracciola was now able to open up a comfortable lead from his team mate and Neubauer ordered both drivers to
ease up. Caracciola followed the orders but Fagioli just went faster and was able to
catch the leading Mercedes-Benz. When Fagioli challenged his team mate for the lead a surprised and tired Caracciola
gave up and for the rest of the race just held on to a second place.
Nuvolari, now racing for Bugatti, could not do much about the Mercedes cars but did a solid effort
and finished a fine third.
Stuck, who had taken over zu Leiningen's Auto Union after retiring his own car, put in some fast laps and advanced from
10th place to finish 4th.
