Climbing Equipment in the Northwest
Backpack, Pack-Frame

The plain wood pack-frame with leather straps attached, used by Margaret and Joseph Hazard in the early 1900s, was a typical pack board of the day. The design was popularly referred to as a "Trapper Nelson," the name given by the Trager Manufacturing Company to their product. A pack sack, blankets, and other bulky items could easily be strapped in place. Unfortunately, the frame was not designed with contours that comfortably fit the back, and the wood frame was heavier than today's tube frame packs.
