3DS System Update released - adds Miiverse and NNIDs

Version 7.0.0-13 makes your handheld that bit handier

Tying your 3DS and Wii U together. Swapping eShop credit between your consoles. Allowing you to harangue Masahiro Sakurai about adding Goku or an American businessman to his game even more frequently. All of this is now possible with the 3DS 7.0.0-13 system update, released today.

The much-vaunted upgrade adds a Miiverse icon to the Home menu, letting you access Nintendo's social network even when games have been started, without having to turn them off.

Linking or creating an NNID allows you to post on Miiverse, as well as gives you access to extra network features. Also added are a SpotPass-enabled System Udate notification, tweaked camera controls on the Home menu and system stability upgrades, while the 5-times system transfer limit has been removed.

Just updating now, glad eshop balances will be shared most of all. Hoping that in future they'll update again so you can use an NNID to login to any console.

I'm looking forward to this. Although I regret choosing my NNID to be something so silly :S

Are there any 3DS game-related communities? I want to draw lots and lots of Poketomonsuta.

yep, i can confirm there is a pokemon X and Y one if you want to go into that one but we now got some issues with mii plaza and the e-shop

    Epic!

In all honesty though, if you're expecting a swapnote/Nintendo letterbox replacement, you'll be disapointed. It isn't linked to your friend list (from what I've seen), and the only real way to interact with users is to search their username (which will likely be different from their name on your friend list) and "follow" them. Furthermore, you aren't even allowed to post your friend code to meet new people, making communities like "Pokemon X and Y" redundant, after all, what's the point in discussing it with them without being able to add them. The only somewhat cool feature is being able to pause 3DS games to post screenshots, and to be able to link your Wii U with your 3DS (if you even have one) and view screens and posts from other people's Wii U games. Even so, this alone is unsatisfying. I think, if not PMs, there should at least be public wall posts, but Nintendo are acting like overly strict parents at this stage so even this is unlikely

    - Not to only look at the negatives, I do appreciate that we at least have something, but I just wish they would'nt be so over the top about stuff like posting friend codes.

Awesome news! I'll be doing the system update and linking my accounts as soon as I get home from work. I just hope a non WiiU owner doesn't take my NNID in the meantime. Can this happen or am I being paranoid for no reason?

I've completed the update and the Miiverse works well; it's quite impressive, but it is not as quick or easy to use as the Wii U version.

However, I cannot access the eShop or the Streetpass Mii Plaza. Error code 007-2100 is reported. This seems to be pretty common at the moment; I hope the problem is that the servers are busy rather than it being a real fault.

Downloaded the update and was quite surprise to see how quick it was to link NNID's.
Anyway Miiverse 3DS is impressive even if there aren't any communities for Kid Icarus,Fire Emblem and various other 3DS games, but it doesn't matter.

So what going to happen to the User Name we already have under Profile in System Settings now that the Nintendo Network ID for the 2DS/3DS has arrived?

As there will be people who currently have a different User Name under Profile in System Settings on their 3DS to their Nintendo Network ID on the Wii U wondering if they will be able unfiy their accounts on the two machines.

Yeah, you can link them together, and once they're linked it asks whether you want to use your 3DS Mii or the one registered to you NNID. Or have I misunderstood what you mean?

Miiverse is working fine on both consoles for me now, but unable to access eShop on either - I get as far as it asking for my password, it accepts that, loads for a bit, then the error code comes up. I'm assuming it's still just down for maintenance?

For example my Username in Profile in my 3DS in System Settings is one thing (and no I haven't applied the NNID update to my 3DS yet so no I haven't registed any name on my 3DS.) yet my NNID on the Wii U is different from the Username from the Profile section in my 3DS in System Settings.

If I were to register my NNID from my Wii U would it replace the Username in Profile in my 3DS that you get by going System Settings then Other Settings then Profile?

I do know from the video that if you register the wrong NNID name that you won't be able to combine your 3DS and the Wii U balances.

There's also a an error message when updating the Mii Plaza..

Your Miiverse is working fine on both consoles??? Do you have 2 Miiverse's or have both your consoles got different Miiverse's?

  17. laughingjumpman Tuesday 10th Dec 2013 at 16:31

I mean that the Miiverse is working fine both on my 3DS and WiiU. Got the eshop to load up on the WiiU just now too, and it displayed my balance as the combined totals from the WiiU/3DS. Can't get it working on the 3DS though.

@Combusken As far as I can see, it displays my 3DS profile username on things like my friends list. On Miiverse that name comes first, with the NNID in grey font next to it.

Saying that, my username is the same on WiiU, it's only the actual NNID that's different.

For those having issues with the eShop and mii plaza update after doing the system update. I had the exact same thing, Power the 3DS off and back on twice, sorted the issue for me at least. :D

  19. stealth1497 Tuesday 10th Dec 2013 at 18:19

    Sweeeeet.

  20. laughingjumpman Tuesday 10th Dec 2013 at 19:08

Nope, still can't get on the 3DS eshop.

There's an update for StreetPass Plaza too, which asks for your NNID but won't work, you just get more error codes :/

  21. Riverlution Tuesday 10th Dec 2013 at 19:28

Not just me who can't get into the e-shop now then? :/

  22. danbish Tuesday 10th Dec 2013 at 20:07

Well I updated after I got in form, work and linked my accounts but I can't get into the eShop at all. I got the StreetPass Plaza update with no problems and have been out this evening were I got StreetPasses and it still works fine. No such luck with the eShop though, and the eShop through my WiiU still shows it's solo balance.

Oh yeah, and on a side note I've just noticed that although my footsteps have been counted by the pedometer while I was out, I haven't received any play coins...which is odd. :?

  23. hunter metroid Tuesday 10th Dec 2013 at 20:32

Just keep trying and the eshop and streetpass update will work because it eventually worked for me. The most likely reason its not working is too many people trying to get this going after the update.

Upsides: Removal of the System Transfer Limit. Account Unification in regards to use of services only (see downside).

Downside: Digital purchases are still tied to the system as opposed to being tied to the NNID. Once Nintendo pull their finger out of their arse and realise that people will be even more willing to use their digital platform for cross-purchasing IF a game that's available for both Wii U & 3DS only needs to be paid for ONCE (not twice) and can be downloaded on BOTH systems (again, without having to pay for the same game TWICE), they're onto a real winner. How many of you would want to play a particular Virtual Console (easiest example) game on both the Wii U & 3DS without having to pay for it twice?

Still waiting for that to come to fruition (and it needs to, it'll stand their credibility in better stead), otherwise, it's nice to finally have that update. Who knows? We may get the tied purchases to NNID rather than the system in a future update.

This update has been my first experience of miiverse, and I have to say it is pretty good. There are some issues, not being able to send private messages being one, but the overall experience is good.
I'm getting a wii u for Christmas, so I can't wait to try out the full miiverse experience!

Yeah, this was my first thought when the Account Unification thing was announced! I have the NES versions of Super Mario Bros and The Lost Levels on my 3DS, but bought SMB2 on the Wii U virtual console. I'd quite like to play SMB2 on my 3DS, but I'm not going to pay AGAIN for the same game. (The only exception being that I bought NES Punch Out!! on the 3DS and then got it when it was released on Wii U because it was only 30p at the time).

Still, hopefully this'll be a future update, although seeing that Wii owners need to pay extra to play games they've already downloaded on the Wii U, I won't hold my breath sadly...

This is a nice feature but it's taken what made the Wii U unique in a sense. It's also very slow (for me anyway). It takes a good 2 minutes at the most to get into it while it takes literally about 10 seconds max on the Wii U version. Sure, the Wii U is more powerful but the browser comes up instantly on 3DS so it's a bit strange but never the less is a nice feature. I hate the instaban on FCs though.

Nintendo have their N.E.R.D (Nintendo Europe Research and Development)working on cloud computing .
Nintendo brought the portable and home hardware teams together "for greater understanding of each others systems
Nintendo community boss says"the head ups in Japan are discussing cross buy verses future proof titles" (buy a virtual console game and it 'all work on everything they make going forward)

So it looks like we'll get the accounts we want just not now, combine eshop and an 3DS Miiverse are the first steps
