Nicole Scherzinger & Lewis Hamilton: Their on/off romance relived

It was claimed at the weekend that Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton have finally got engaged, but today the racing ace himself denied getting down on one knee.
This romantic wishy-washyness is exactly what we've come to expect from the showbiz world's ultimate on-again, off-again couple, who over time have been on more ups and downs than Ross and Rachel on a roller coaster.

July 2008 - Relationship status: Amber
Nicole and Lewis's fledging romance, believe to have started up in November 2007, runs into trouble pretty quickly when she admits that she is 'cooling things down' to focus on her music and is subsequently linked to will.i.am. This is a warning of things to come...
September 2008 - Relationship status: Green
Scherzy says Hamilton "definitely could be The One" and confirms that they are looking for a house together.
November 2008 - Relationship status: Amber
Nicole wears a pretty darn sparkly ring, prompting the couple's first engagement rumour! Aaw, we remember it fondly! When asked if it's all true, Nicole is absolutely horrified that people are "trying to marry [her] off", so perhaps it was inevitable that...
January 2010 - Relationship status: Red
...They split not long after. Rumours that the couple are on the rocks begin circulating in September 2009, and in January the following year a spokesperson confirms that they are done. But before we even have time to dry our eyes...
March 2010 - Relationship status: Green
...Scherzilton is back on! After Lewis apparently agrees to a set of rules drawn up by Nicole, including leaving his Blackberry at home while on dates (ha, Blackberry - how 2010!), the couple go back to happily gushing about each other again.
August/September 2010 - Relationship status: Green
Nicole describes herself as "mega broody" and says that getting married and having kids is "something we'll hopefully be doing soon".
November 2010 - Relationship status: Amber
The couple's pals regret buying fancy wedding hats and babygros, as Nicole completely changes her mind and says that she is focusing on her career and doesn't want to marry Lewis.
May-July 2011 - Relationship status: Green. OK, no, Amber
Lewis seemingly confirms that the couple are engaged, commenting at an awards show that Nicole is "planning the wedding". Nicole's dad then refers to Lewis as his "future son-in-law" and mentions a proposal, by which point everyone assumes it's a done deal, but Nicole throws a spanner in the works by denying that she is engaged in a tweet just one day later. Stop toying with us, Pussycat!
October 2011 - Relationship status: Red
Just one month after denying another engagement rumour, Lewis confirms that the couple are no longer together. But, true to form, within a matter of weeks he's embarking upon 'a full-on mission' to get her back, and she's admitting that she still loves him.
February 2012 - Relationship status: Green
Lewis snatches his woman back from the grip of alleged suitors Steve Jones and Tinie Tempah after wooing her on a romantic New Year's ski break. The couple are declared officially 'back on' after being filmed holding hands, and vow never to break up again. The world fails to hold its breath...
July 2012 - Relationship status: Amber
The pair go through a rocky patch after Lewis allegedly parties with ten girls in his London hotel suite until 5.30am. The Formula 1 star narrowly avoids being told to sling his hook after bombarding Nicole with flowers and apologetic love letters in a bout of class-A grovelling.
October 2012 - Relationship status: Amber
It's Nicole's turn to sleep on the couch after she is photographed apparently kissing showbiz boogeyman Chris Brown. The alleged smoochers deny any wrongdoing, but Lewis still hits the roof, so it's claimed.
June 2013 - Relationship status: Green, no wait, Red
Lewis drops a big hint that he is about to propose to Nicole, but then less than a week later, it's revealed that the couple actually split up a month before. Lewis later says that he is "going through a tough time" as he mourns the "loss of someone really, really special in [his] life". Everyone in earshot suddenly has something in their eye.

Nicole's X Factor protege Jahmene Douglas claims that she is still "in love" with Lewis.

The couple apparently get back together after having a heart-to-heart at Nicole's Beverly Hills mansion, a bit like Judges' Houses, but with real emotion.
August 2013 - Relationship status: Urgh, no, Red
Nicole insists once and for all: "It is over."
November 2013 - Relationship status: Amber, Red, oh, who knows?!!
Nicole gives off mixed signals, saying in one breath that she "would love" to get back with Lewis, before calling their split "liberating" in another.
January 2014 - Relationship status: Green
Nicole and Lewis out themselves as a couple after posing for photos in the same remote arctic location. Having been busted, the couple give fans what they want by actually standing next to each other in a sweet snap from a later trip to Rome. Nicole, Lewis, we really hope it works out this time!
