It’s an understatement to say that Coates, who worked as a youngster in her father's betting shops, has shown that a woman can succeed in a traditionally male world. She set up online gambling website Bet365.com in 2000 after training as an accountant and taking over a small chain of betting shops. Bet365.com has since developed into one of the world’s largest online gambling companies, and is making over £200 million in profits, £100 million of which has gone towards setting up a charitable foundation. The current joint chief executive, Coates was appointed a CBE for her services to the community and business in 2012, and in 2013 was named as one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK by BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.
