Danny Boyle

Director

Raised in a working-class Irish Catholic family, Danny Boyle was earmarked for priesthood by his mother from an early age. At 14 a priest persuaded him not to pursue the calling by transferring to a seminary, and not long after, he discovered drama. Now he is one of the UK’s most popular directors, known for films such as Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire, the last of which won eight Oscars in 2009, including the much sought-after Best Director. He is also one of only seven directors to win a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Director’s Guild and Academy Award for the same film. As well as his consistent success as one of Britain’s foremost directors, Boyle’s role at the helm of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics makes him talismanic, and defined the director as a national hero.
