Douglas Carswell, MP

Carswell’s decision to defect from the Conservatives to the UK Independence Party in August 2014 – and to resign as an MP at the same point – was arguably the decisive turning point in last year’s UKIP revolution. By submitting his choice to the test of a by-election, Carswell showed a degree of integrity that more or less erased the stigma of defection. The personal respect in which he was held by his constituents enabled him to regain his seat in his new colours, and his success in turn inspired UKIP supporters everywhere.
