EE has appointed the BBFC to provide a framework for its content at the ‘Strict’ level as of 16 March 2015. This is in addition to the BBFC’s role in defining 18 content on the UK’s mobile networks which is placed behind adult filters.
The EE Strict Classification Framework defines content that is unsuitable for children under the age of 12 and is based on the BBFC’s well known and trusted PG age rating. More information on the BBFC PG rating is available here.
The self regulatory partnership between EE and the BBFC brings trusted, transparent and consistent BBFC standards to bear on content accessed via the mobile network. It protects younger children by ensuring 12, 15 and 18 content is only available to older children or adults. The Classification Framework is a living document which is updated regularly to reflect evolving public attitudes and societal concerns.
The EE Strict Classification Framework has been developed using the BBFC’s Classification Guidelines. The Guidelines are based on large scale public consultations involving around 10,000 people, and are revised every 4-5 years. As part of these consultations, the public considers what content is suitable at the PG level.
The Classification Framework enables EE to self-classify its mobile commercial content as either suitable or unsuitable for users under 12. The Classification Framework will also be used to calibrate the internet filters used by EE’s customers on the ‘Strict’ setting to the extent technically possible.
