What is the College of Computing & Informatics?

The College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) is the new focal point for Drexel's computing and information research and education. The College serves as a central hub for multi-disciplinary computing activities, which applications and utility span across a wide range of academic domains in addressing the opportunities and challenges of the information age. As the College continues to showcase Drexel's long-standing strengths in computing and informatics disciplines, its recognition as a world-class academic unit for both research and educational programs will grow.

CCI combines the strengths and assets of many of Drexel's undergraduate, graduate, and professional computing and informatics programs. Specifically, the College unites the former iSchool, College of Information Science & Technology; the Department of Computer Science (from the College of Engineering); and the Computing and Security Technology program (formerly housed in the Goodwin College School of Technology and Professional Studies).

Why was the College of Computing & Informatics formed?

In early 2013, an interdisciplinary task force was formed to review the broad area of computing and informatics/information studies programs available at Drexel and evaluate where programs might overlap. The task force concluded that the University's broad program in computing is at a tipping point-that strong growth in the academic programs and in the R&D portfolio, both enabled by an outstanding faculty body, creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity to effect the academic organizational change necessary to:

• Position the University as an academic leader in computing;
• Enhance cross-college interdisciplinary learning and research in computing;
• Establish computing education as vital to all Drexel majors, improving student outcomes for computing majors and non-majors alike.

The development of a powerful narrative around the University's collective computing activities creates an opportunity to make computing a centerpiece in the University's strategic growth. As computing plays an increasingly critical role in all sectors of the economy, a rich, coherent academic program in computing promises to contribute to the development of the Innovation Neighborhood, strengthening links to regional industry, government and not-for-profit entities.

When did the transition to the College of Computing & Informatics happen?

The joining of the Computing and Security Technology program, the iSchool, and Department of Computer Science into the new College of Computing & Informatics began in September 2013. Current students then continued in their respective colleges/schools in the 2013-14 academic year, and will continue on their current curriculum trajectory. All students in the academic units in the iSchool, Department of Computer Science, and the Computing and Security Technology program were matriculated in the new College in fall 2014.
