INSIGHT AND INSPIRATION
A bright star in Hadiqa Kiani’s life

Hadiqa Kiani once again caught everyone off guard by adopting a little baby boy whose parents had passed away in the earthquake. Baby Naad-e-Ali, is her good luck charm, as a few days after his adoption, Hadiqa tied the knot with an Afghan businessman who lives in UK. She was ecstatic with joy as it will give the little one time to bond with the father. Her in-laws are also pleased with her move of adopting Naad-e-Ali. She was reluctant to give more details regarding her prince charming and we honour her privacy. She will be flying back and forth to keep her commitments and to look after her hearth and home.

We wish the new family all the best.

Hadiqa took time out from her new role as a Mother, to talk to Motherhood. Here we bring you her exclusive story.

Q. How old were you when you got your first major break through?
Ans: I was 20.

Q. Is anyone else musically inclined in your family?
Ans:
Yes both my elder brother and sister are. My sister is a wonderful singer who does not sing professionally. My brother is in fact one of my teachers in music. He is not only a music producer (having understanding of both Eastern and Western styles of Music) but also has command of playing various musical instruments. Above all he's an excellent singer. Actually if you are asking about our parents, no one in our family has ever been interested in music. However both my father (late) and mother were into poetry. They are authors of various books.

Q. Your first playback singer role was for the movie, "Sargam", have you lent your voice to any other movie?
Ans:
No, Sargam was the only movie that I sang for. I always admired Adnan Sami Khan for his musical talent and I think that was the main reason for me to sing for Sargam. Moreover Adnan and I were students of the same Music Teacher "Sohail Rana". I’ve known him since I was a kid.

Q. You have collected many awards including Tamgha-i-Imtiaz; how do you feel about receiving the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz?
Ans:
I feel great. I think it is all Allah's blessing, my family's support and appreciation of my listeners.

Q. Your greatest career achievement is?
Ans:
Actually it is yet to come. I think my achievement till now is that I have managed to render my voice in various styles of music. As a Pop singer no one expected that I would come out with song like Boohay Barian which became a hit in not only Pakistan but in all the South Asian community around the world. Its adaptations were made in various languages. It was rerecorded for various movies not only in Pakistan but in India too. Yes Boohay Barian was my achievement rather it was our (My Team's) achievement.

Q. Have you ever gone back to your old school in Rawalpindi?
Ans:
Yes I did go to Viqar-Un-Nisa. I placed my forehead in the lap of my Principal "Madam Bano". I had the honor to spend time with my Music teacher "Madam Nargis Naheed" who upon my request played the sitar for me. She's no more in this world and I miss her a lot. During my school days music was taught in Viqar-Un-Nisa as a subject.

Q. You have studied in Kinnaird College and Lahore College for women, which college did you graduate from?
Ans:
I never studied in Lahore College. I did both my intermediate and graduation from Kinnaird College in psychology. Later I completed my Masters in Psychology from Government College Lahore. Actually I am very proud to be a "KCite" and a "Ravian".

Q. You recently adopted a baby boy, and held a press conference so that there would be no controversies. Were you anticipating bad press with this fantastic move of yours?
Ans:
Being a women it was important for me to tell the whole world that I would be carrying a baby in my lap and that he should be considered as my son. Press has always been very supportive in my career so I had the responsibility to tell them myself.

Q. How does it feel to be a brand new mother? Do you plan to take him on tour?
Ans:
Oh it’s the best feeling a woman can have. It feels great and yes I intend to take him on my tours.

Q. Your personal life is a closed book? Any particular reason given the fact that your fans would love to read more about you?
Ans:
Oh No, I am rather an open book. My fans log on to my official website www.hadiqakian.net and get the latest information. My site is regularly updated on a weekly basis and some times after every couple of days. Then there are other fan sites such as www.hadiqasite.com where they chat too and discuss my various musical moves. I have never hidden anything from them ever. They were informed the day I got married, divorced after five years and then when I recently got married again. I respect their feelings a lot. I have great regards for them. Actually I am nothing without them. I have nothing to hide.

Q. You have gone on record as saying, and I quote," I love to experiment. I am a very challenging person. When somebody comes up with a weird idea I just love strange things sometimes.” Was there a particular reason for this statement or was it a shock and awe statement?
Ans:
People specially journalists who have followed my career new exactly what I meant. Let me give a couple of examples here:

  1. My Music video Mahi is a good example in which I've played the role of a Vampire. Now you see vampires are not supposed to look beautiful or charming. Normally celebrities (especially girls) hate to look ugly on screen (especially when you are a pop singer).Acting in a video (when you are not a film star) putting vampire teeth is indeed a weird idea for so many.
  2. Being a Pop singer and coming up with a pure desi Punjabi song is a surprise element and challenging too.
  3. If you see my video "Jogi Bun Kay Aaa", I’ve played eight different roles. One of them was Chinese for which I had to shave my eye brows (It is weird).
  4. I have recently completed a video which is about a Mental Hospital. I have played the role of a mental patient for which I had to study various mental disorders in order to do justice to the role that I was given by "Jami". It wasn’t easy believe me it wasn’t. I had to be in a certain state of mind and then coming out of
that state of mind was again a difficult task. Yes it was challenging.
  5. Yes I am a Pop singer and people expect lovey dovey songs from me but at the same time I have a responsibility as a musician. , have recently completed an English Album for a wider audience which is "Eastern Alt Rock". It is not POP music at all. The album talks about the harsh realities of life. It is different.
Hence I would say that new and challenging (difficult to execute) ideas do inspire me a lot. That’s me I can't help it.

Q. When you are touring who takes care of the little one?
Ans:
One who took care of me. My mother.

Q. Any surprises of motherhood, I'm sure it is not a bed of roses for a new mom, so what's your pet peeve?
Ans:
To be honest no surprises as I raised my nephews. I knew what I was getting into. Yes I do get very little time to sleep. I have made changes in my routine accordingly as I am self employed. I hardly sleep three hours a day. Change my clothes four or five times a day after he throws up milk on me.

Q. What is your favourite song and who is your favourite singer?
Ans:
Can't name one. I hear various genres of music so it’s hard to answer.

Q. What is your idea of motherhood and how do you perceive motherhood?
Ans:
A child must be raised with lot of responsibility. Maximum time should be spent with the kids. Earning money day and night and spending little or no time with the kids is the worst thing parents can do. Aim of the parents should be to teach them about moral values, how to be a responsible citizen, how to deal with good and bad patches in life, to stay positive. Good communication between kids and their parents is extremely important. Kids must not hide things. If they don't, there are fewer chances for them to go wrong. I perceive motherhood as a very sacred thing.

Q. This question is being asked of sheer curiosity, why is it that we never see you wearing traditional outfits? Wouldn’t you be helping the fashion industry if you wore their outfits on your foreign and local concerts?
Ans:
I feel very comfortable in the outfits that I wear. In fact it’s always a mix and match of East and West. My outfits and accessories always depict eastern motives. I have worked with almost all local designers to create unique outfits that are a mix of east and west. I've even done a bridal shoot for Deepak Pervani. I recently wore TRUCK ART designed by "Maheen" during my musical performance. So if you ask me I am promoting my culture with modern presentation I am. It is just like my music which is a blend of both east and west.
