Pop stars claim victories at MTV Movie Awards
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pop stars rocked the MTV Movie
Awards on Saturday, with rapper Will Smith winning best actor for Ali
and singer Mandy Moore claiming breakthrough actress honors for A Walk to
Remember.
Director Peter Jackson danced with his hobbit-costumed
cast in a videotaped acceptance speech after The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship
of the Ring took the best movie award.
After winning his acting award, Smith took the stage in
a Muhammad Ali imitation. "I'm a baaaad man," he exclaimed.
Smith thanked his wife for putting up with the long filming
schedule of the boxing movie.
"But it wasn't all bad, because I got in real good shape,"
he said.
The award for best action sequence went to Pearl Harbor.
Director Michael Bay accepted the trophy, a gilded popcorn bucket, and dedicated
it to the thousands of lives lost in the real-life bombing that thrust the United
States into World War II.
American Pie 2 claimed the best kiss award for a
same-sex lip-lock between stars Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott. In his
acceptance speech, Scott thanked the dozens of girls he has kissed dating back
to sixth grade.
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor won for best musical sequence
in Moulin Rouge.
"I'm really bummed we didn't win best kiss," Kidman told
McGregor in her acceptance speech. "We should have rehearsed more."
The comically anti-authoritarian event celebrated Hollywood
by playfully mocking it. The show began with a short parody of the hit movie
Spider-Man, in which Peter Parker's spider bite turns him into portly
co-host Jack Black.
The ceremony placed an emphasis on fashion and comedy in
recognizing popular films, performances and cinematic moments from the past
year.
Denzel Washington, who won a best actor Oscar for playing
a crooked police officer in Training Day, won the MTV award for best
villain. His competition included Zhang Ziyi from Rush Hour 2, Christopher
Lee from The Lord of the Rings, Tim Roth from Planet of the Apes
and the late singer Aaliyah from Queen of the Damned.
The show, taped at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles
for broadcast Thursday, was co-hosted by Buffy the Vampire Slayer star
Sarah Michelle Gellar. Among those presenting were Nicolas Cage, Charlize Theron,
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Vin Diesel.
The ceremony featured live performances by artists including
Eminem and Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rocker Ozzy Osbourne, whose family "reality"
show is MTV's biggest hit ever.
Winners were determined by a nationwide survey of MTV viewers,
with nearly 8 million votes collected online.
