Agnes Lam

Poet Agnes Lam is one of the most authentic Hong Kong voices writing in English, and her poetry captures Hong Kong’s unique sensibility and culture. She has published three collections of her own – Woman to Woman and Other Poems, Water Wood Pure Splendour and A Pond in the Sky – as well as studies on Asian poetry in English. A native of Hong Kong, she trained as a poet first in Singapore and obtained a PhD in linguistics from the US. Lam taught for many years at the English Centre of Hong Kong University, from which she retired in 2012, and has mentored many young writers in Hong Kong. Her 2014 book, Becoming Poets: The Asian English Experience is based on interviews with poets in several Asian cities, and her work has been widely anthologised around the world in several languages including English, Chinese, German and Italian.
