Professor Gabriel Matthew Leung, GBS

Professor Gabriel Leung, dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, is a pillar of the public health community in Hong Kong and globally in his roles as clinician, professor and public health authority. During the SARS epidemic of 2003, Leung established and directed the university’s Infectious Disease Epidemiology Group, and he led the government’s actions in combatting the H1N1 outbreak of 2009. He served as Hong Kong’s first under-secretary for food and health from 2008 to 2011 and was director of the Chief Executive's Office for a year. Leung has been instrumental in the improvement of cost-effectiveness, financing and policy research in health in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific region. He received the University Teaching Fellowship and the Faculty Teaching Medal, the highest honours for teaching awarded by the university and its medical school.
