Stone Article Alleges 'Rape Culture' at UVA
In November, Rolling Stone magazine published an article titled "A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA" detailing a student’s description of a gang rape at a fraternity.
In the article, the victim a third-year student identified only as 'Jackie', said she was raped by seven men at the Phi Kappa Psi house in 2012.
The article pushed the university into the center of a national discussion about how schools handle sexual-assault claims.
Charlottesville police began investigating the claim. The fraternity was vandalized. The fraternity voluntarily suspended itself. Later, the university suspended all fraternity activities at the school until January.
Questions started to rise about the accuracy of the claims in the article. The fraternity issued a statement rebutting the story.
In December, Rolling Stone issued a statement saying "In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced."
In March, Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo announced the department did not have enough evidence to prove the assault happened as described and the investigation was suspended. Longo maintained, "that doesn't mean something terrible didn't happen to her."
In April, Columbia Journalism School published a review of the Rolling Stone article and found a "failure of journalism" on behalf of the magazine's staff. Rolling Stone immediately retracted the article.
