Professor Howard Shelanski Confirmed as Administrator, Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs

Georgetown Law congratulates Professor Howard Shelanski, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 27 to serve as the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget.
Shelanski, currently director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission, was nominated by President Barack Obama in April.
“Howard Shelanski is a brilliant scholar, a deeply knowledgeable antitrust lawyer and economist and dedicated public servant,” said Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor. “I am very pleased that he will be serving our nation in this important post."
Shelanski came to Georgetown Law in 2009 from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he was professor and co-director of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology. His teaching and research focus on antitrust, regulation and telecommunications policy.
Shelanski has taken leave from teaching to work in government on several occasions. In 2012, he was appointed director of the FTC Bureau of Economics. From 2009 to 2011, he was deputy director of the Bureau. He served as chief economist of the Federal Communications Commission from 1999 to 2000 and as a senior economist for the President’s Council on Economic Advisers at the White House from 1998 to 1999.
Shelanski received his J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992 and his Ph.D. in economics from Berkeley in 1993. After graduating from law school, he clerked for Judge Stephen F. Williams of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Judge Louis H. Pollak of the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia and Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court. He practiced law at Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel before joining the Berkeley faculty in 1997.
