Today we hear that, starting July 1, Radio Sputnik will be heard on the low-power 105.5 signal from Bethesda, giving it decent coverage inside the Beltway and into the northwestern and western suburbs. The 105.5 signal, technically known as W288BS with 95-watts, is licensed to communications attorney John Garziglia's Reston Translator firm in Reston and had been carrying Bluegrass Country, the former WAMU-owned Americana and folk music channel. Radio Sputnik, formerly known as Voice Of Russia, is the radio arm of the government-owned Sputnik News Agency. According to Federal Communications Commission rules, the 105.5 translator outlet can only relay a broadcast signal and we hear that it will be fed by the HD3 of Urban One's urban contemporary WKYS, 93.9..... Van Susteren Loses MSNBC Gig - 6/30 - DC-based Greta Van Susteren has been let go by MSNBC, where she was hosting the 6 PM hour. She's been at the Comcast-NBC news network less than six months. Van Susteren had let go from Fox News last year. According to nytimes.com/a>, her MSNBC show averaged 1 million viewers in June, an 18% drop from the previous hour..... WFED will continue to be heard via the digital offerings of WTOP's other area FM signals as well as on 1500 AM..... 25 To Pick Up WDVM Call Letters - 6/28 - Hagerstown's Channel 25/WHAG is picking up the WDVM call letters on Saturday. The former NBC affiliate is looking to emphasize its new programming line-up, which features local newscasts for the extended DC area, including portions of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. More at facebook.com/whag.your4state. The WDVM call letters were sported by DC's Channel 9, now WUSA, from 1978 to 1986..... Trump Tweets Against WaPo - 6/28 - From slashdot.org: The Washington Post, which has been critical of Donald Trump and his administration in its coverage, has become the latest victim in Trump's Twitter tirade. On Wednesday, he accused Amazon of not "paying internet taxes (which they should)," adding that the company is using the Post "in a scheme to dodge" the taxes. Quick fact check: Amazon doesn't own the Washington Post, Jeff Bezos - in his personal capacity - does. At any rate, Trump's furious Tweets come a day after the Post reported that a fake issue of Time magazine with Trump on the cover was hanging in some of the president's golf clubs. The timing of this is also awkward because just last week the president met with Bezos and other top executives to discuss ways the White House can modernize government and aid the tech industry. But the two have a long history..... Kaye Lake Dies - 6/28 - DCRTV hears that former NewsChannel 8 sports anchor and reporter Kaye Lake has died. She'd been in hospice care in Nebraska suffering from cancer. More as we hear it..... Charlie Harris Dies - 6/28 -  Charlie Harris (right), who spent over a quarter of a century in the newroom of Cumberland MD's news talk WCBC, 1270, has died at the age of 69. He joined WCBC in 1980, after arriving in Cumberland as a staff announcer and account executive at WCMD/WJSE. According to wcbcradio.com, over the years, he would become the prime news anchor of the "Dave Norman Program," and would sub as the host of the show. Harris also did a stint as station manager at WFWM at Frostburg State University. "Charlie was a versatile broadcaster, hosting the 'WCBC Radio Auction,' serving as the knowledge music maven for Saturday mornings, and the voice of countless commercials," according to the station's website. "Due to diabetes, Charlie retired from broadcasting over 10 years ago, but he would return on occasion to host the morning show, and was also involved in the early broadcasts on New Years Eve from the ball drop on the downtown Cumberland Mall".....WAMU Tops DC Radio Ratings Again - 6/27 - The Washington market radio ratings for the "second week" of June. Sunni Joins Joe Clair At PGC - 6/27 -  Sunni (right), who hosts the midday slot at CBS Radio's urban contemporary WPGC, 95.5, will move to mornings to join Joe Clair's show. "Sunni is the perfect fit for the 'Joe Clair Morning Show' and we are incredibly fortunate she wanted to get up early and make the transition to mornings," says Steve Davis, vice president of programming for CBS's DC radio cluster. Sunni has been on-air for WPGC since January 2011. In addition, she is active on WPGC's social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Prior to joining WPGC, she worked at radio stations in Detroit, NYC, and Miami.....Nickels & King Get Promoted At RQX - 6/27 - Ashley Nickels gets promoted from music director to assistant program director at Cumulus's hot adult contemporary WRQX, Mix 107.3. She will continue to host middays. Also, Seth King gets named evening host on WRQX. He had been doing part time fill-in work.... WPOC To Run Bobby Bones At Night - 6/26 - Baltimore country outlet WPOC, 93.1, is putting nationally syndicated country radio morning man Bobby Bones in the evening slot. Local talent Laurie DeYoung is already top rated on iHeart's WPOC in mornings, so the station is putting in at night. DeYoung ranked second overall in the latest Nielsen radio ratings for May, so she's not going anywhere. But, according to Tom Taylor Now, "iHeart may figure it's time to at least introduce Bones to Baltimore. If the rumor mill's on-target, you'll be hearing about Bones introduced into more iHeart markets where he doesn't clear in morning drive." Bones can already be heard in mornings throughout much of the Baltimore market via DC's WMZQ, 98.7, which is also owned by iHeart..... Urban One Closes On 92.7 - 6/26 - Urban One, formerly Radio One, closes on its $2 million purchase of 92.7, WWXT, in Prince Frederick MD. The seller was Redskins owner Dan Snyder's Red Zebra, which was similcasting sports talker ESPN 980, WTEM, on it. Urban One is simulcasting its DC adult urban contemporary WMMJ, Majic 102.3, on it with new calls - WDCJ. The deal was announced in April, with a lease agreement for the new WMMJ relay starting May 1..... Carl Rochelle Dies - 6/26 - Carl Rochelle, 79, a former broadcast journalist with CNN who became a narrator of political commercials and public service announcements through a self-titled company he started in 2007, died May 20 at a hospital in Arlington. The cause was cancer. Rochelle came to the Washington area in the mid-1960s and was a radio and television journalist for ABC, NBC, and MSNBC at various times. He spent 20 years with CNN, covering wars in the Middle East, aviation and transportation issues, and national security, before leaving in 2001 amid staff cutting. More at washingtonpost.com..... Evan Lambert To 5 - 6/23 -  Evan Lambert (right) joins Fox's Channel 5/WTTG as a reporter. He comes from Tampa's WTVT-TV, another Fox-owned station. He will be seen on Fox 5 and Fox 5 Plus (sister Channel 20/WDCA) newscasts starting July 10. The DC native has also worked at TV stations in Orlando and Myrtle Beach. WaPo Uses Bot To Moderate Comments - 6/22 - The Washington Post introduces ModBot, a software application built in-house that utilizes artificial intelligence to moderate online comments. The proprietary technology uses machine learning to automatically filter comments that require human moderating, flag stories that require real-time monitoring, and approve or delete comments based on the Post's discussion policy. The technology evaluates comments using an algorithm that has been trained by the Post’s years-long history of human-moderated comments. Before that, Harold was a reporter and bureau chief of the Miami Herald and an editor at DC-based C-SPAN..... Jurgensen To Scale Back Redskins Coverage - 6/21 - Washington Redskins legend Sonny Jurgensen will return to the Redskins Radio broadcast booth this fall for his 37th consecutive season. But he plans to do so on a limited basis, covering only home games. Jurgensen, who will turn 83 in August, shared his plans in a telephone interview with the Washington Post from his offseason home in Florida..... 4th Divorce For Rush - 6/21 -  Conservative talk titan Rush Limbaugh's (right) fourth wife has been cheating on him with hunky young athletes - setting the stage for a $470 million divorce. But that's only temporary. A new "tenant" is scheduled to start airing on low-power 105.5 come July 1. No word yet on who that will be. Bluegrass Country was sold earlier this year by WAMU to a local foundation and it can still be heard on WAMU's digital HD2 signal and at bluegrasscountry.org. The Gamut can also be heard on low-power 98.3 from Great Falls, 820 from Frederick, via WTOP's digital HD3 signals, and at thegamut.fm..... No new program director was named to replace him at WFRE, we're told..... Residents Fault WMAL Tower Site Sale Plan - 6/19 - Residents near WMAL's 630 AM tower site on Greentree Road in Bethesda complain that developer Toll Brothers is preserving fewer trees, generating more traffic, and leaving less usable open space than they'd like. Via hearings with the Montgomery County planning commission. WMAL owner Cumulus hopes to get $75 million from the developer's plan to put a mix of single family home and townhomes on the site, just off the Beltway. WMAL will move its AM transmitter site to further-out Germantown, which would cause a weaker signal for many. More at bethesdamagazine.com..... Sarah Caldwell Leaves 11 - 6/18 -  News anchor and reporter Sarah Caldwell (right) is leaving Channel 11/WBAL TV on June 23. No word on why she's leaving or where she's going. She writes on Facebook: "It is with a heavy heart and immeasurable gratitude that I announce my departure from WBAL-TV 11 Baltimore June 23. For the past 15 years, you have welcomed me into your homes and your hearts and embraced me and my boys from the start. Much love." More as we hear it.....WAMU Makes Evening Changes - 6/18 - Beginning Monday, June 19, American University news talker WAMU, 88.5, is making some program changes on weeknights. An edited one-hour version of Joshua Johnson's morning "1A" show will air at 8 PM. WAMU is moving its previous 8 PM line-up of shows to the 9 PM hour, including an additional airing of weekend shows like the "Ted Radio Hour" and "This American Life." On Tuesdays, the station is bringing back a one-hour special programming slot featuring limited-edition shows, podcasts, and special offerings like "Invisibilia." Duckman, who has worked at full-service news/talk/music WNAV in Annapolis since 2004, has also been heard on DC's WASH during its full-service adult contemporary Metromedia glory days in the 1970s, plus DC's then-adult contemporary WWDC, Rockville's contemporary hit WINX, and Waldorf/La Plata's oldies XTRA 104, WXTR. Monday, June 12".....VOA Cuts Interview With China Critic - 6/11 - From cnbc.com: A dispute over why the DC-based Voice Of America abruptly shut down an interview with a vocal critic of Beijing is raising questions about whether Chinese leadership influenced the US broadcaster. On April 19, taxpayer-funded VOA cut short a live interview with Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui and subsequently put five of its own journalists on administrative leave. "I suspect somebody caved in to the Chinese government's demand, because the timing itself was very suspicious," one of those journalists, Mandarin Service Chief Sasha Gong, told CNBC. "Someone very, very powerful must be very, very afraid of this. Otherwise, nothing makes sense." Gong said Chinese authorities met with VOA's Beijing correspondent two days ahead of the April 19 interview and asked for its cancellation. VOA management then asked Gong to cancel the interview, or at least to shorten it to 15 minutes, she said. Gong said management declined to cancel the interview in writing before it began, but then abruptly pulled the plug one hour and 19 minutes into the live conversation..... Previte is the owner of the Compass Rose restaurant, which has been named to many Washington DC best restaurant lists upon its opening in 2014. She holds a master's degree in public policy from George Mason University and is married to NPR "Morning Edition" co-host David Greene..... WHGM runs DC-Baltimore radio veteran Jason Kidd's Smash Hits newer oldies format and is expected to continue to do so after the sale. Laura Evans Slams Article, Says Reporter Misquoted Her - 6/5 -  Former Channel 5/WTTG news anchor and reporter Laura Evans (right) tells us an article that appeared in late May in the Prince William County news site potomaclocal.com claiming she said "morale is at an all time low" in the news department at WTTG, has been taken down. She writes to DCRTV: "You need to know the attention grabbing headline, which claimed I said 'morale is at an all time low' is 100% inaccurate... and the tone of the article was an inaccurate representation of my talk... I followed up with the Potomac Local reporter who wrote the original article, letting him know he misquoted me, and that the tone of his article was highly negative and inaccurately reflected my speech, which had little to do with the station. I asked him to change the headline to make it accurate. He reviewed the video of my speech and not only realized his headline was wrong but that in fact the tone didn't fairly and accurately represent my talk. So he deleted the article in its entirety".....Fred Manfra Says Goodbye To Orioles Radio - 6/5 - On Sunday evening, Fred Manfra called his final radio game for the Baltimore Orioles and got a standing ovation from fans. He let me go out with his 3-person crew (!) and, when, playing with his film camera, I forgot to turn it off and burned thru all of his film, forcing him to do a fast magazine change when news broke, Wayne Wood looked at me and just cocked his head. Later that same day, he set up to shoot a porn shop on 14th Street. The guy inside came charging out. When he got close, Wayne warned, 'Don't touch.' But the guy slammed the lens, jamming the camera into Wayne's eye. Still rolling, Wayne kicked the guy
in the balls. Down he went. Rubbing his eye, Wayne said, softly, 'I said don't touch.' So cool. An intellectual. A sharp dresser. A horseman. Wayne Wood." According to a staff memo from Dan DeVany, vice president and general manager of WETA-FM: "David and Marilyn share a deep love for the great outdoors and, specifically, the Colorado Rockies. They have both hoped that one day they would live and work in that beautiful part of the country. That day has arrived. David will be joining the on-air staff of Colorado Public Radio, while Marilyn pursues free-lance opportunities in the Denver area." He adds: "Our listeners know David and Marilyn as bedrocks of Classical WETA. Their daily on-air presence, their expertise at interviewing classical artists, their professionalism and zeal during on-air fundraising, their work in Washington's cultural community and their countless behind-the-scenes contributions to the operation of the station, have been central to the sound and the spirit of Classical WETA." Emilie Voss Joins FCPD - 6/2 -  The Fairfax County Police Department's Media Relations Bureau now features two former broadcast journalists at the helm. This week, Emilie Voss (right), a former television evening news anchor at WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio, joined the FCPD as the deputy director of the Media Bureau. Before WTOL, Voss anchored the news in Palm Springs, California, Lansing, Michigan, and Grand Junction, Colorado. Voss joins Julie Parker, the bureau director, who joined the department last September. Parker spent five years as the Media Relations Division director for the Prince George's County Police Department and was a reporter with Channel 7/WJLA before that.
