The Ireland/Canada copro Room took home nine Canadian Screen Awards Sunday evening, including best picture and best performance by an actor in a leading role for Canadian Jacob Tremblay.

However, it was foreigners that picked up the film’s three other talent prizes, with American actress Brie Larson taking home the best actress prize and fellow American Joan Allen honoured in the best supporting actress category. Irish director Lenny Abrahamson won the achievement in direction prize for Room, with Irish-Canadian author Emma Donoghue picking up a Screenie in the best adapted screenplay category.

Canadians Ethan Tomban and Mark Kirkland won the Achievement in Art Direction/Production Design for their work on Room while fellow Canucks Sid Armour and Jennifer Gould also won the Achievement in Make-Up prize for their work on the film. Irish editor Nathan Nugent picked up the Achievement in Editing prize for his work on Room.  

When accepting his award, nine-year-old Tremblay expressed his surprise at winning the best actor award when he was up against several other experienced adult actors, including Christopher Plummer, who he called a “legend.”

“I’m not the best at sports, I’m never going to win a Stanley Cup or a gold medal, but I love acting. To win an award for something that I love is super special to me,” Tremblay said.

Other multiple award-winners on the film side were Hyena Road and the U.K./Canada/Ireland copro Brooklyn. Hyena Road won prizes for Achievement in Best Overall Sound, Achievement in Sound Editing and Achievement in Visual Effects (Tattersall Sound and Picture worked on Hyena Road, with VFX done by Toronto-based Intelligent Creatures and Dynamic Effects Canada.) Brooklyn won two prizes,both for the work for Canadian talent connected to the film. Michael Brook won Brooklyn the prize for best original score,with best cinematography going to Yves Belanger.

Benjamin August won the best original screenplay prize for the Christopher Plummer-starrer Remember, with  Nick Serino winning a Screenie for his performance in a supporting role in Sleeping Giant. The best feature documentary prize, meanwhile, was awarded to Alan Zweig’s Hurt.

On the TV side, Schitt’s Creek continued to pull in the prizes on Sunday, winning three awards including Best Comedy Series and acting prizes for Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara. The cop drama 19-2 took home the Best Dramatic Series prize – the only award the program won on Sunday – while Orphan Black won two awards for Ari Millen and Tatiana Maslany’s lead performances in the series. The Book of Negroes won the Best TV Movie or Limited Series award, while copro Vikings won the Best International Drama prize. The ensemble cast of Sunnyside, meanwhile, won the Screenie for Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series.

When accepting the best limited series prize, Damon D’Oliveira, producer on The Book of Negroes, thanked Sally Catto, general manager, programming, CBC English Television, and the pubcaster for backing the miniseries , which he said took five years in coming together. “Nothing ventured nothing gained – and they took a risk,” he said.

Following her win for best adapted screenplay, Donoghue told media backstage that as soon as she started on the screenplay for Room, she felt Canada would be the perfect filming location for the feature.

“Every time I met the filmmakers, every conversation I had I said ‘make this film in Toronto, make it in Toronto.’ I’m so happy that they set it up as an Irish/Canadian coproduction,” she said.

The night also saw the presentation of two television-focused Golden Screen Awards, meant to recognize the most-watched Canadian comedy/drama and the highest-rated reality series. Corner Gas: The Movie won the prize in the Canadian Drama/Comedy category, while The Amazing Race Canada won the award in the Reality Program category.

As well, Norm Macdonald suggested a change of name for the CSA statuettes from “Screenies” to “Candies,” in memory of Canadian actor John Candy who passed away in 1994. “So what I’m asking you to do is, if you’re a presenter, ignore the teleprompter and say ‘the Candy goes to…’ and if you’re lucky enough to win one, go ‘I’ve won a Candy!’” Macdonald told the audience. The idea was met with approval from the crowd, and the presenters and winners adopted the name in many of the evening’s subsequent introductions and acceptance speeches.

In overall wins throughout the three nights of prize-giving, The Book of Negroes had the largest haul with 10 TV awards (plus one digital media prize), followed by Schitt’s Creek and Room with nine wins each. Orphan Black wrapped its 2016 Screenie season with seven wins, while The Amazing Race Canada won five prizes overall.
