Fans of a Greek soccer club in Athens, site of the 2004 Summer Olympics, tried to burn an American flag before the team's match against a Scottish club and booed during a moment of silence for victims of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

There was a minute's silence at all 77 European games played during the week. But Alex McLeish, coach of the Scottish club Hibernian, said that as the players stood in silence to pay their respects in the Athens stadium before Thursday's UEFA Cup game, many fans of the team AEK Athens jeered and tried to burn an American flag. It would not light. A group did set fire to an Israeli flag.
