Q&A

Catherine Tate
Catherine Tate was born in 1969 and raised in London. In 2001, she took her solo show to the Edinburgh Festival; in 2004, having appeared in the TV sketch show Big Train and the sitcom Wild West, she got her own BBC2 series. The award-winning Catherine Tate Show has been nominated for a Bafta, and a third series will be broadcast this year. She lives in London with her partner and their daughter.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I don't have one: I'm a glass-half-empty person. Having said that, if I could be guaranteed the health of my loved ones, I'd feel marginally better.

What is your greatest fear?

I'm far too superstitious to say.

Which living person do you most admire?

Anyone who stands up for themselves and others - as long as they're not annoying about it. And Joan Rivers.

What is your most unappealing habit?

Pouting. I don't realise I'm doing it.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

I'm so untidy it makes me sick.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Loud cheerfulness. You know where you are with miserable people.

What is your favourite smell?

Fresh coriander.

What is your favourite book?

A Town Like Alice, by Nevil Shute.

Radiator or air conditioning?

Air con. I can't bear the heat.

Cat or dog?

Neither. I don't like cats with their little cat heads, and dogs slobber all over the place.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Coke floats - about four a day.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

'Am I bovvered?'

When and where were you happiest?

Working in Australia in 2001.

When did you last cry, and why?

I cry almost every time I watch Deal Or No Deal.

What song would you like played at your funeral?

A hymn would be preferable, but I'd leave the ultimate choice to those burying me.

How would you like to be remembered?

As that old woman who died peacefully in her sleep at 106.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

That I shouldn't be so bloody negative all the time.
