In an effort to increase blood donations, the CDC has recommended ending the ban on blood donations from gay men, UDN reported. Ending the ban would also bring Taiwan’s blood donation guidelines in line with those of most developed nations.
The Taiwan Blood Services Foundation said that other current standards that prevent people from donating should be enough of a safeguard against unsafe blood being donated, and that the blood screening process is adequate in preventing the use of infected blood.
According to its 2015 annual report, the Taiwan Blood Services Foundation collected more than 2.5 million units of blood (500mL of whole blood = 2 units; 200-300ml of Apheresis platelet = 1 unit), giving it 4,208,690 total units. The foundation also saw a slight increase in the percentage of first-time donors at 14.41%.
