CC cleanup
CC Sabathia soon will undergo "a routine cleanup" on his arthritic right knee, general manager Brian Cashman said. "It’s not something that’s of concern or considered serious." The Yankees had planned on Sabathia having such a postseason procedure. Fortified by an improved knee brace, Sabathia, 36, made 30 starts and went 9-12 with a 3.91 ERA.
Coaches return
Cashman isn’t recommending any coaching changes for 2017. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild is the only one on an expiring contract and the GM was to meet with him Wednesday. "I’d like to have Larry back," he said.
Pitching moves
Right-handers Blake Parker and Kirby Yates were claimed off waivers by the Angels, and Anthony Swarzak elected free agency in lieu of an outright assignment. Following his Tommy John surgery, Nathan Eovaldi (eligible for free agency after 2017) is a candidate to be non-tendered.
Minor notes
Last year’s first-round pick, James Kaprielian, will pitch in the Arizona Fall League. He missed most of this season with elbow issues. Outfielder Clint Frazier, the key to the Andrew Miller deal, requires more development and is expected to open the season at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Cashman said. Catcher Kyle Higashioka will be added to the 40-man roster.
