Garito, Frank J.

Frank J. Garito, former New Rochelle Mayor and lifelong resident of New Rochelle, died on September 18, 2013. He was 82.

Frank was born on May 24, 1931 in New Rochelle to the late Vincenzo J. and Rosina (Marra) Garito. Frank was a Sergeant in the Army during the Korean War. Frank was the Mayor of New Rochelle from 1970 to 1976 and prior to that he was a member of the Westchester County Board of Supervisors. Frank was president of James Garito & Sons Inc., a family contracting company for many years. He went on to start the Asbestos Corporation of America in 1984. He was currently the President of the NDR Group which has completed over 1200 units of low and moderate income housing in New Rochelle where "Garito Manor", a 102 unit senior housing facility, in the west end, was named in his honor. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Buildings Trades Employers Association of NYC. Frank was the former President of The Environmental Contractors Association of NYC, Board of Directors and Trustee of the Boys' and Girls' Club of New Rochelle, The Calabria Mutual Aid Society, New Rochelle Italian American Organization, Foresters of America, and Council 339 of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight.

Frank was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, and his high school sweetheart, Rose who died on May 25, 2008. He is survived by three children: Frank Garito and his wife Kathleen, Stephen Garito and his wife Maria and Roellen Bishop; six grandchildren; Stephanie Richards, Leanna and Sam Garito, Weston and Jena Bishop and Isabella Rose Garito; his brother Vincent Garito and his sister Ann DiMaggio. He was predeceased by his brother Anthony and his sister Grace Danielsen.

Visiting hours will be Saturday 4-7pm and Sunday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel inc. 16 Shea Pl. New Rochelle. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Church New Rochelle. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
