Topspin

Three Democratic candidates for governor have now picked their running mates, choices that mark key moments in any campaign because Illinois now requires hopefuls to run in the primary on a ticket with a lieutenant governor.

Campaigns can coordinate splashy announcements to try to get maximum publicity for the picks. But none of the running mates chosen so far are big household names in statewide politics.

Have you heard of them? It's Friday before a three-day weekend, a perfect time for a pop quiz.

From the notebook

*Pre-Labor Day campaign launch: Recently appointed Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer got a jumpstart on his campaign Thursday, when he appeared with current and former Democratic officials to receive their endorsements before the traditional post-Labor Day start to the campaign season.

Among the endorsers: Bobbie Steele, who served as board president for a time after the death of the John Stroger, and is the mother of the late Robert Steele. Deer was appointed to replace Steele after his death in June.

Also backing Steele are U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., Ald. Michael Scott Jr., 24th, and Ald. David Moore, 17th.

West Side Democratic committeemen, including board President Toni Preckwinkle, picked Deer in July from among 11 candidates. At the time, other candidates said they planned to also run in the March 2018 primary, but only Deer so far has set up a campaign committee, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections database.

Deer so far has only raised $2,000 in large contributions — $1,000 from Bobbie Steele's campaign committee and $1,000 from Alex Pissios, president of Cinespace Chicago, a film studio on the West Side.

Deer, 45, owns a counseling and drug treatment center in Lawndale. He had done work for the Steele political organization. In 2003, he placed third in a six-way race for 24th Ward alderman. (Hal Dardick)
