Historical Note

The Beverly-Morgan Park area was occupied by Pottawatomi Indians and a handful of white settlers until 1833 when the Indians ceded their land rights to the government. In 1839, John Blackstone purchased 300 acres encompassing land known as the Ridge, a heavily wooded highland. Settlers used stagecoaches on the Vincennes Trail, an old Indian trail, to reach the City of Chicago and Fort Dearborn to the northeast. By 1852, however, the Rock Island Railroad built stations in the area, bringing many more settlers.

Morgan Park was named after Thomas Morgan who purchased most of Blackstone’s land in 1844. After the Civil War, his children sold the land to the Blue Island Building and Land Company. In 1869, the company platted the subdivision of Washington Heights which contained most of present day Morgan Park and Beverly. A pleasant suburban alternative to city living, this land would later be re-subdivided as demand for housing in the area grew. In the 1870s, the community became more attractive with the establishment of schools such as the Morgan Park Military Academy in 1873, the Female College in 1875 and the Baptist Theological Seminary in 1877. The Morgan Park Library, now the George C. Walker Branch of the Chicago Public Library, was established in 1893. In 1882, Morgan Park incorporated as a village serviced by 46 Rock Island trains daily. From the 1890s to the early 1900s, transportation was expanded to surface lines on several main streets.

A prominent resident of the Ridge area was Alice Helm French, wife of the first director of the Art Institute of Chicago. The name Beverly reportedly was suggested by her for the 91st Street train station built in 1889. The name later became Beverly Hills, reflecting the topography of the Ridge. As the area was settled, single family houses predominated with more elaborate homes on the Ridge west of Longwood Drive and apartment buildings near the Rock Island Railroad tracks. With the nearby Dan Ryan forest preserve, Beverly and Ridge Country Clubs and Ridge Park, the area was a green suburban setting. Large sections of Beverly south of 99th and west of Western were undeveloped prairie until the 1940s.

In 1890, part of Beverly was annexed to Chicago and part to the Village of Washington Heights. The Village of Morgan Park was annexed to the City of Chicago in 1914 following a protracted fight amongst the citizenry. Organizations were formed to represent and lobby for both sides and were known as either “Annexationists” or “Home Rulers.”

Early settlers in Beverly-Morgan Park were mainly Protestants of English, Irish, Swedish and German descent. The area experienced a building boom between 1910 and 1930, however the community maintained a suburban atmosphere, forbidding the construction of factories or saloons near the Ridge. In the 1920s, Catholics began to settle in this predominantly Protestant community, and by 1936 there were two Catholic parishes. African Americans began settling near the Rock Island Railroad line east of Vincennes Road in 1915. In 1921, the Chicago Commission on Race Relations maintained that blacks and whites in Morgan Park had cordial relations but that African American residences were limited to the area east of Vincennes Road.

The post-WWII building boom brought a great increase in population. In 1947, the Beverly Area Planning Association (BAPA) was founded. In decades to come, BAPA would fight panic peddling by unethical real estate agents, successfully promoting the area’s excellent housing stock and historical significance. The Ridge Historical Society, founded in 1971, worked to increase awareness of the neighborhood’s numerous landmark buildings. These agencies worked to nurture the stable, integrated middle class neighborhood that Beverly/Morgan Park remains today.

Scope and Content

The materials in the Beverly-Morgan Park Collection (BMPC) document the evolution of two separate but related communities physically, politically and socially from 1884 to 2002. A notable feature of the collection is the material about annexation from 1892 to 1914 when Morgan Park was annexed to Chicago. Annexation material can be found in the series titled Village of Morgan Park and includes legal papers, election materials and newspaper clippings. Annexation is represented in other series, such as schools, since it was an issue that permeated all aspects of civic life in Morgan Park. Also of note are materials in the Clubs and Organization series representing the active social and cultural life of Morgan Park. This series includes 24 Morgan Park Woman’s Club yearbooks from 1897 to 1964. Also here are materials from the Morgan Park Library, later the Walker Branch of the Chicago Public Library, from 1892 through the 1920s, such as circulation statistics, reports and addition and withdrawal records. In the Historical Sketches series there are several essays by long-time residents, as well as brochures and pamphlets for historical sites and architecturally significant residences. Of note in the Schools series: material about Morgan Park Academy which began as a military school in 1878 and a significant amount of Morgan Park High School material, including 13 yearbooks. For an excellent history of Morgan Park High School, with much information about annexation issues, see Box 7 folder 30, “How We Got Our High School,” 1943, by Enoch J. Price.

Arrangement

The collection had no order when accessioned. It has been arranged in series similar to other neighborhood collections at Chicago Public Library. Photographs, negatives and newspapers are physically separated into their own series. The papers in the BMPC consist of thirteen subject series followed by photographs and short runs of neighborhood newspapers.

Series 1: Biographical Sketches, 1953-1974

This series contains photocopied newspaper clippings, and one program, encompassing announcements, anniversaries, birthdays and obituaries. Woman of the Year articles clipped from the Beverly Review are included here, as well.

Series 2: Businesses, 1884-1954

This series contains mostly newspaper articles about businesses in the Beverly-Morgan Park community, in addition to business cards and a doctor’s sign.

Series 3: Cemeteries, 2002

Newspaper clippings about clubs and organizations are also found in this series.

Series 5: Historical Sketches, 1874-1994

This series is organized by the following community headings: Beverly, Beverly-Morgan Park, Blue Island, Morgan Park, Ridge, Tracy and Washington Heights. It contains newsletters, guides and histories from community historians and organizations, such as the Ridge Historical Society. Series 11: Schools, 1884-1980

This series contains a variety of materials related to or produced by sixteen separate Beverly-Morgan Park schools. These include catalogs, correspondence, directories, histories, newsletters, newspaper clippings, programs and reports. Heavily represented are materials from various Boards of Education, Morgan Park Academy (military school), and Morgan Park High School. In addition to the materials listed above, these schools are represented by contracts, receipts, reports, and yearbooks. Morgan Park High School materials reflect issues related to the ongoing question of annexation to the City of Chicago.

Series 12: Transportation, 1894-1967

This series contains timetables and a history for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which introduced rail service to Morgan Park in 1852. Ordinances, newspaper clippings and a drawing may also be found in this series. Chicago and Southern Traction Company and Metra are also represented here.

Series 13: Village of Morgan Park, 1894-1912

This series contains nine folders of materials related to the contentious issue of annexing the Village of Morgan Park, incorporated in 1882, to the City of Chicago (See also Newspapers). Other folders cover municipal activities such as elections, sidewalk construction and various legal proceedings. Materials include contracts, newspaper clippings, ordinances, pamphlets, petitions and posters. Morgan Park was incorporated as a village in 1882 and eventually annexed to Chicago in 1914.

Newspapers, 1896-1995

These include the Beverly Review, the Home-Ruler, The Morgan Parker, the Ridge Record, Town Talk, the Unionist, Village View, the Southtown Economist and the Suburban Star. Newspapers are arranged alphabetically.
