The Martian dominated the South Korean box office for the second straight week, hauling in almost half of the market share for the Oct. 16-18 weekend.

The film starring Matt Damon accounted for 46.5 percent of tickets sold during this time frame, according to the Korean Film Council's KOBIS database. The film is offered in various formats in South Korea, including the more expensive 3D, 4D and Imax versions that have helped boost sales to $21.6 million. This makes Korea the second-largest international market to date for The Martian, following the U.K. Twentieth Century Fox Korea distributes the Ridley Scott title in the country.

In terms of admissions, by which local industry observers rate a film's performance, The Martian crossed the 3.11 million mark over the weekend. The film is expected to continue to do well as big-budget sci-fi films have traditionally found success in the Asian country (Interstellar became one of the greatest all-time hits).

The Intern retained its No. 2 spot, as it drew in 17.2 percent of the revenue. The Anne Hathaway-Robert De Niro film has grossed almost $20 million so far, while admissions for the Warner Bros. Korea title are about to cross the 2.8 million mark.

Next, in the third spot, was The Advocate: A Missing Body, which also remained in the same rank as the week before. The CJ Entertainment title reaped 11.9 percent of box-office sales, adding to its cumulative gross of about $7 million. The crime actioner is expected to cross the 1 million ticket mark in the days to come.

The Transporter Refueled debuted in fourth place with 5.1 percent of the market share. Handled by Daou Tech, the action film has earned $807,608 during its first week in Korean cinemas.

A second CJ Entertainment film, The Accidental Detective, finished at No. 5. The film reached 4.6 percent of the share as it retained its ranking from the previous weekend. Its total revenue now amount to about $18 million, or 2.57 million admissions.
