A retired iconic British Airways aircraft will be making its way over to Surrey later this afternoon.

Dunsfold Aerodrome, in Stovolds Hill in Cranleigh, will be taking delivery of the retired British Airways 747, registration G-BNLY, on Saturday (December 5).

The exact timings are uncertain at this stage, due to ever-changing weather conditions, however a spokesperson for Dunsfold Park confirmed that the aircraft will be departing from Cardiff at approximately 1pm, landing in Cranleigh at around 1.40pm.

Aircraft to remain as permanent exhibit at Dunsfold Aerodrome

British Airways (BA) announced in July it was retiring its fleet of 31 747-400 aircraft due to the "devastating impact" of the COVID-19 pandemic on the airline.

The G-BNLY is one of the last two 747s to be retired and to leave BA's engineering base in Cardiff. It is among several aircraft painted in heritage liveries to mark the airline's centenary last year.

A spokesperson said the plane will be "waved off" today by the BA engineers who have proudly maintained the 747 fleet for many years.

Once at Dunsfold Aerodrome, the G-BNLY - adorned in the iconic Landor livery, used between 1984 and 1997 - will remain there as a permanent exhibit.

It will join its sister 747, G-CIVW, which was retired in late October and features the current Chatham Dockyard livery.

Aerodrome not open to spectators

A statement on Dunsfold Park's Facebook page reads:

Dunsfold Aerodrome will not be open to spectators and people turning up whose names are not on our guest list will be turned away.
