Hollywood's hot new couple, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, had never met until Cruise called her out of the blue and asked her for a date last month, Us Weekly reports.
Holmes secretly flew to Los Angeles in early April after Cruise summoned her to a private meeting at his office. Four hours of banter later, Cruise fessed up and asked the young actress on a sushi date, Us reports in its May 16 cover story (on newsstands Friday).
Cruise apparently was not impressed with Holmes' messy, dented BMW because he arranged for workers to clean up her clunker. (Related story: A very romantic Cruise)
The next evening, the sushi date occurred not at a restaurant but aboard Cruise's private jet, 15,000 feet above Southern California, Us reports. That was followed by a ride on his motorcycle, a romantic beach trip and more secret dates.
Tom and Katie — dubbed TomKat by celebrity blogs — stepped out publicly on April 27, when they arrived together in Rome for the David di Donatello Awards.
Holmes' publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnick on Tuesday said she did not know how the couple met and could not confirm the Us details. Cruise's publicist and sister, Lee Anne Devette, did not immediately return a call for comment.
Despite their frequent public displays of affection, Cruise and Holmes haven't offered up many details on their relationship.
When asked by Extra how they met, Cruise reverted to his private nature. "I'm going to hold on to that one for myself for the time being," he said.
But he said about Holmes: "She's an extraordinary woman. It's beautiful. I feel really happy. I'm more than enamored."
The romance could be a dream for Holmes, who cooed to Seventeen magazine last year: "I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise."
