INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT

On 20th January 2011, for the fourth time in its history, the European Parliament issued a resolution calling the European Commission to provide political and financial support for TV Belsat. EC sponsors series “Window on Europe” broadcasted on the National Belarusian Television. Resolution condemned also governmental repressions towards journalist. The document was a joint initiative of all principal political groups represented in the European Parliament.

In previous resolutions, MEPs appealed also to the Belarusian authorities to register Belsat TV and grant an entry visa to its director Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy.

In February, 2010 police attempted to break in the flat rented by a Belsat representative in Minsk. As a resullt, independent journalist Ivan Shulha was arrested and sentenced to administrative detention for reported hooliganism. Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, and Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, spoke in defence of the Belsat contributor.

In January, 2012 U.S. president Barack Obama signed the “Belarus Democracy and Human Rights Act”. It sets the main priorities of U.S. policy towards Belarus. One of them is the support for the electronic media in the Belarusian language, including television Belsat.
