PHILADELPHIA ā€” Just when it looked like Travis Konecny was turning things around, misfortune struck the Flyers' rookie forward in a major way.

During Monday night's game against the St. Louis Blues, Konecny had to leave the game after two periods and did not return.

On Tuesday, Flyers general manager Ron Hextall announced the 19-year-old is expected to miss four to six weeks of action with a lower-body injury.

Various sources say Konecny suffered injuries to his left knee and ankle. He was seen leaving the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night in a walking boot.

Konecny had just returned to the lineup for that game after sitting out the previous two as a healthy scratch.

The timing of the injury not only is bad for the player but the team as well.

The Flyers have been shut out in back-to-back home games (without a road game in between) for the first time since 1999 and have scored only 12 goals over the past nine games.

Konecny is fifth on the Flyers in total points with 22, including seven goals in 51 games.

So Hextall could be attending the Lehigh Valley Phantoms game against Binghamton on Wednesday night at the PPL center in Allentown to take a look at some possible replacements.

Taylor Leier might be a good candidate. He already had a 10-game call-up to the Flyers earlier in the season and registered a goal and an assist in that trial. Leier has posted nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points.

Also, Jordan Weal, who was picked up in the Vinny Lecavalier-Luke Schenn to Los Angeles trade last season, has been enjoying a sensational year for the Phantoms.

He leads the team in scoring (15-30-45) and was recently named AHL Player of the Month for January, posting 5-9-14 numbers in 11 games. He's second in the AHL in scoring.

At the same time, there are some who wonder if the Flyers might be able to energize their attack if they called up one of their promising defensemen, such as a Travis Sanheim or a Sam Morin.

Sanheim, the No. 1-rated prospect in the Flyers' system (according to The Hockey News), has been lighting it up offensively for the Phantoms, with 7-15-22 and a plus-8.

But Hextall sounds loath to bring up one of these youngsters if they're not going to see regular ice time.

"There's no push," Hextall said recently. "Why bring him [Sanheim[ up here for spot duty when he can play 20 minutes a night down there?"

The Flyers are carrying eight defensemen with NHL experience (Michael Del Zotto is recovering from injury).

That makes it difficult for someone who has yet to play in an NHL game to crack the lineup.

"He [Sanheim] is having a good year, a lot of natural ability," Hextall said. "His decisions with the puck during the rush are something he has to tune up a little bit. The defensive side of the puck he needs to shore up. He's gotten stronger and that's a real positive."

As for bringing up a spare forward, the Flyers will need to recall someone to at least serve as a No. 13 spare.

Konecny's injury also raises more questions about what Hextall might or might not do at the March 1 trade deadline, which is just a few weeks off.

There's been a lot of speculation that Mark Streit, who is headed toward unrestricted free agency on July 1, might be a chip to obtain draft picks and/or prospects. Or maybe a proven scorer.

Whether the Flyers can find a partner to match up salaries with against the cap remains to be seen. The Flyers were projected to have about $1.7 million in cap space available before the Konecny injury.
