Passenger Train
Services over Unusual Lines
listing regular passenger trains over obscure
rail routes in the British Isles 2021 Compiled by
Richard Maund This page was first uploaded on 20 May 2021 - up-dated on 18 October 2021 - recently incorporated amendments are shown in red.

Introduction.
The 2021 timetable year was scheduled to operate from Sunday 13 December 2020 until Saturday 11 December 2021, with an intermediate change date of Sunday 16 May 2021 from when services would be subject to the summer and autumn timetable variations to carry the service through until December. However, the public eNRT timetable which should have started on 13 December 2020 was "cancelled" (no timetable was published), and while 'base line' working timetables from that date were published, they continued to be subject to such extensive alteration as train operators reacted to Covid-19 effects that it was impracticable to compile PSUL for that half of the timetable year. The service details given below apply from Sunday 16 May 2021 until Saturday 11 December 2021 subject to any later changes which may be advised (any such changes shewn below should be taken as applying from 16 May 2021 unless otherwise shown). All dates quoted are inclusive, but services and timings are subject to further and short notice alteration at any time - particularly over the Christmas/New Year period and on public holidays. Services were particularly subject to short-term changes on account of Covid-19 coronavirus during the period late July to mid-September. Some unusual 'unsocial hours' routeings may be to allow for engineering possessions on a more direct route - to which trains may revert if there is no engineering work. OpenTrainTimes and
Realtime Trains websites enable checking for any amendments or short term variations to working timetable details for specific train schedules. To receive automatic advice as pages are up-dated, use a web monitoring program, such as

The Up and Down Fast lines and the Up Slow line follow their established route through Norton Bridge but the Down Slow line is segregated - via Searchlight Lane Junction - on a separate alignment well to the west (there is no "junction" at Heamies Bridge where the Down Slow rejoins its old alignment). At Stafford, if the signal at the Down end of platforms 1, 3, 4 or 6 shows a "clear" aspect with route indication "S" (or platform 5 shows a "clear" aspect with no "feather") this indicates use of Down Slow line - a train running direct to Crewe would then use this route. In normal operation, the first departure from Wrexham General to Bidston and last arrival at Wrexham General from Bidston use this connection. For the current timetable period, most weekday trains turn back at Wrexham General (instead of running to and from Wrexham Exchange) and are booked to do so in platform 3, using this link, but check locally. In consequence, Wrexham Exchange Junction to Wrexham Exchange has a minimal service of only two to four trains on weekdays (but a better service on Sundays).

Regular but infrequent services
In each case, check with the railway concerned near the potential date of operation
and note that some of these lines may also be used on other occasions when so advertised.
Briton Ferry, Court Sart Junction / Up Flying Loop Junction - Hendy Junction (Swansea District line)
Excursions from South Wales via this route to The Royal Welsh Show, held near Builth each year in late July. However, the Show has been cancelled for 2021 - see their website.
Soho South Junction - Perry Barr South Junction
On some football match days except Saturdays, football specials from Birmingham New Street to Witton - outward journey only -
may operate for principal 1500 KO Aston Villa home games, while similar trains
may apply for major matches with other KO times. For possible dates see
Aston Villa's website
and check with Realtime Trains.
The return trains (and Saturday outward and return trains) usually run via Aston.
Tyseley Locomotive Works, Warwick Road Platform - Small Heath South Junction
Vintage Trains' advertised 'main line' excursions resume using this branch from 4 August 2021. This does not include their Shakespeare Express service. The platform is also used for 'internal' shuttles on Tyseley Locomotive Works open days - see further entry in next section, below.
Dublin Connolly (platform 7) - Newcomen Junction
This route is used if the route via Drumcondra is blocked. At the conclusion of the All-Ireland Hurling and Football finals (and, sometimes, semi-finals), held at Croke Park on Sundays mid-August until mid-September, if a Maynooth local or local special train is to be held at Drumcondra station to receive passengers after a match, A908 1710 SuO Connolly - Sligo is in consequence diverted via this route to overtake.
2021 dates: normally in mid-to-late August each year
[Kilmeadan - Carriganore - ] Gracedieu - Bilberry [Waterford & Suir Valley Railway]
Sunset Express excursions every Thursday 17 June to 26 August 2021.
Schedule: 1900 Kilmeadan - Bilberry and return
Occasional opportunities...
The following sections of preserved railways over which no regular public services operate are known to have been used occasionally by special services open to the public. Unless specially noted below, there does not appear to be consistent or regular public use, so watch the relevant railways' "events" web pages for possible use. Heritage railways temporarily suspended their operations because of Covid : check their websites for information about their 2021 operations
Embsay - Bow Bridge loop [Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway]: trains use this section if stock blocks the loop line at Embsay.
Moor Road (Leeds) station - Balm Road loop [Middleton
Railway]: the railway is authorised to operate passenger trains over this line on a limited number of occasions
each year. On two weekends in recent seasons trains have used this section, some trains being freight trains carrying
passengers.
Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre - connection with Network Rail; Roundhouse platform - Springwell
[Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society]:
the Springwell service usually operates on event days
Swithland Sidings - Nunckley Hill Platform [ - Mountsorrel] [Mountsorrel & Rothley Community Heritage Centre]: as advertised on their and Great Central
Railway websites. From autumn 2019 services have normally been restricted to the Swithland Sidings - Nunckley Hill Platform section, with no workings to Mountsorrel. Swanwick Junction - end of line at Greenhill [Midland Railway Trust]
Tyseley Locomotive Works internal trackage [Tyseley Locomotive Works]: on works open weekends.
Norchard Low Level - Middle Forge Junction ground frame [Dean Forest Railway]: may be used on special events days - particularly on those when separate services are advertised: Norchard (high level) - Parkend and Norchard (low level) - Lydney Junction (although on Thomas days the low level platform is used only for Thomas + brake van shunts). Santa services between Norchard and Parkend usually operate from and to low level platform with reversal at Middle Forge Junction. Most regular trains at Norchard use the high level platform on the through line.
Dereham - Hoe Road [Mid Norfolk Railway]
Sheringham North Norfolk Railway station - Sheringham Network Rail station [North Norfolk Railway Mainline Cromer Dining Trains]
Long(ue)ville Junction - Fletton Junction [Nene Valley Railway]
Mangapps Railway Museum Southminster Road branch [Mangapps Railway Museum]
Norton Platform - Bishop's Lydeard [West Somerset
Railway]: a service between Taunton and Bishop’s Lydeard may operate on specified summer
Saturdays - see entry in England - South West section above.
Horsted Keynes - limit of former line towards Ardingly [Bluebell Railway]
Bodiam - Junction Road and Robertsbridge - Robertsbridge Northbridge Street [Rother Valley Railway] (presently out of use until further notice)
Goosefield Sidings - Haven Street [Isle of Wight Steam Railway]
Llangollen Goods Junction - Pentrefelin Sidings gate and to former Goods yard (Diesel road) [Llangollen Railway]: look for September Diesel Weekend brake van trips
Downpatrick - Loop Platform - Magnus's Grave (former King Magnus's Halt ("King's Halt")) - present end of line towards Ballydugan (Ringreagh) [Downpatrick & County Down Railway]: the use of some part of this line - to serve the Loop Platform - usually applies for their Halloween and Christmas services, and did so in 2019 but not in 2020.
Don't forget that all Sunday trains - and even weekday trains - are subject to further diversion or alteration.
