On Saturday 19 October, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) will open its doors to the public between 11:00 and 18:00 CEST.
Visitors to ESO will have the opportunity to experience the world of ESO first hand! Among the activities planned for the day are:
- Virtual and 3D tours — embark on all-inclusive journeys into and around some of ESO’s most breathtaking sites and groundbreaking instruments,
- Live connection to ALMA — connect to the largest astronomical project in existence, consisting of 66 antennas at an altitude of 5000 metres on the Chajnantor plateau in Chile,
- ESO Chile Chill — take a moment to relax by watching incredible images from our sites in Chile and listening to a chillout soundtrack,
- Talks, podcasts and documentaries — listen, watch, and learn more about ESO,
- Planetarium show — get a chance to see the stars, even in broad daylight, thanks to our planetarium activity,
- Face painting and gifts for the little ones — children will have lots of fun having their faces painted in diverse astronomical motifs such as stars, galaxies or comets,
- See ESO’s new building for the first time — the innovatively styled office building will help to house the Garching staff, and be a cradle for the technological innovations needed for ESO’s ambitious projects such as the Extremely Large Telescope,
- Plus much more.
Visitors do not need to book a visit in advance. You can simply show up at the activities you are interested in. ESO has a cafeteria where light refreshments will be available.

Am Samstag, dem 19. Oktober, öffnet die Europäische Südsternwarte (European Southern Observatory, kurz ESO) zwischen 11:00 und 18:00 Uhr MESZ ihre Pforten für die allgemeine Öffentlichkeit.
Wer die ESO besucht, kann die Welt der ESO aus erster Hand kennenlernen! Zu den zahlreichen an diesem Tag geplanten Aktivitäten gehören:
- Virtuelle und 3D-Touren – begeben Sie sich auf eine all-inclusive-Reise zu den atemberaubenden ESO-Standorten mit ihren einzigartigen Teleskopen und Instrumenten
- Liveschaltung zu ALMA – verbinden Sie sich direkt mit dem größten astronomischen Projekt überhaupt, bestehend aus 66 Antennenschüsseln auf einer Höhe von 5000 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau in Chile
- ESO Chile Chill – gönnen Sie sich einen Moment der Ruhe und Entspannung mit eindrucksvollen Aufnahmen unserer Standorte in Chile mit passendem Chillout-Soundtrack
- Vorträge, Podcasts und Dokumentationen – Hören, sehen und lernen Sie mehr über die ESO
- Planetariumsshow – beobachten Sie den Sternhimmel, obwohl es taghell ist!
- Kinderschminken und kleine Geschenke für Kinder – Schminken mit astronomischen Motiven wie Sternen, Galaxien oder Kometen, ein großer Spaß für Kinder
- Sehen Sie erstmals den ESO-Neubau – das Bürogebäude mit dem innovativen Design wird mithelfen, die wachsende Zahl der ESO-Mitarbeiter in Garching zu beherbergen und die Wiege vieler technologischer Innovationen sein, die für die ambitionierten Projekte der ESO wie das Extremely Large Telescope benötigt werden

Eine Voranmeldung ist nicht erforderlich. Nehmen Sie einfach an denjenigen Aktivitäten teil, die Sie interessieren. Die ESO verfügt außerdem über eine Cafeteria, in der kleine Imbisse erhältlich sind.
