By Chris Mbunwe
The traditional enthronement and public presentation of the new Fon of Mankon Village in Mezam Division, Northwest Region, took place on Tuesday, June 7, to mark the end of mourning after the disappearance of Fon Solomon Anye Angwafor, who travelled to meet his ancestors recently.
The colourful ceremony began as early as 5am with princes, princesses, notables and kingmakers appearing with wood ash robbed all over their bodies. One of the lead king makers announced in Mankon language that the new Fon has been found and the symbolic “stoning” to empower and accept him will take place.
The population would return to a nearby stream to clean themselves and prepare for the second part of the ceremony, which the name of the Fon was pronounced. Void of speeches, he retires to the Palace and reappear days later for presentation to the administration.
For 156 years, the Mankon Fondom has been ruled by: Fon Angwafor II from (1866 to 1919); Ndefru III (from 1959) and SN Angwafor III who ruled Mankon for 63 years.
The new Fon Fru Asaah Angwafor IV is the Principal of Government High School Nkwen, Bamenda.
