The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is co-orgnizing the Sub-regional workshop for South Asian Silk Roads Transboundary Serial Nomination and Cultural Landscape Initiatives, 6 - 7 December, 2021, Kathmandu, Nepal, with the Department of Archaeology (DOA), Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal, in close cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, as a follow-up to the three previous sub-regional workshops (1st in September 2014 in Kathmandu, 2nd and 3rd September 2017 and November 2018 in Xi’an, China).

The workshop, with financial support from the UNESCO/Korean Funds-in-Trust Silk Roads project, will bring together representatives and experts from four South Asian countries (Bhutan, China, India, and Nepal) as well as international experts, ICOMOS and UNESCO to discuss potential serial and transnational World Heritage nominations of the Silk Roads cultural routes network in South Asia.

Due to the current Covid alarming sanitary situation in Nepal, the workshop will be conducted totally online. The main purposes of the workshop will be to contribute to:

  1. Developing a holistic approach to heritage routes through Nepal and South Asia through improved data, enhanced legal frameworks and enhanced capacity for site management and conservation;
  2. Reinforcing the discussion and coordination platform for Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, ICOMOS, UNESCO as well as international experts for the South Asian Silk Roads Transboundary Serial Nomination, and Cultural Landscape Initiatives;
  3. Better understanding of the heritage corridors and cultural landscapes in South Asia.
