For Bill Mohana, every day at work in the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre now triggers traumatic memories.
"How do you get past it, if every person brings it back again?" Mr Mohana said.
The small business owner runs Hair Royale on the centre's fifth floor where four weeks ago Joel Cauchi was shot dead after murdering six people.
Mr Mohana said he remembers seeing a "stampede" of people running, before he bundled his clients into the back of his salon and locked the door.
The sound of people's "horrific" screams and the gunshots fired by NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott, as she took down the knifeman, still ring in his ears.
"My imagination ran completely wild … I was shaking, extremely nervous, terrified …we didn't know what [the sound] was," he said.
When he re-opened his salon a week later, Mr Mohana said he felt sick and that often now, his clients want to talk about the attack.
While talking about the trauma can help, he said, it sometimes leaves him distracted.
"Before you know it, your body's here but your mind's not here anymore," he said.
"Something's happening to me and I've never experienced it before … I'm still trying to understand it.
"I don't wish it upon anybody, to have to go through what we've gone through and what I can only imagine the families that lost their loved ones, what they're going through."
Ashlee Good, Dawn Singleton, Jade Young, Pikria Darchia, Faraz Tahir and a Chinese national whose family has asked she not be named, were all killed on April 13, 2024.
Around a dozen others were hospitalised with injuries related to the attack.
Community in 'high level of distress'
Immediately afterwards, crisis support charity Lifeline mobilised an "army" of mental health volunteers.
They provided support to more than 900 Westfield staff, shoppers and people paying their respects at makeshift memorials and vigils.
"Over 11 days we had 38 people providing 77 four-hour shifts," Sarah Grattan from Lifeline Northern Beaches said.
"Counsellors supported all walks of life, family members, people who had been affected, people for whom it had dredged up a lot of old memories and traumas."
Two weeks after the attack, Lifeline recorded its busiest day on record, with almost 3,500 phone calls to the crisis support hotline alone.
Ms Grattan said the news cycle and events across Australia, and the world, triggered a lot of anguish.
"We've seen this really high level of distress in the community.
"There was the Bondi tragedy but then also the stabbing in Wakeley and the domestic violence incidents that have been happening.
"We provide financial counselling as well, and we've seen big increases in enquiries for that."
Waverley a 'safe place'
As shoppers returned to the centre almost a week after the tragedy, Waverley Council Mayor Paula Masselos said she noticed many were "hypervigilant".
"People will be very conscious of safety, but I think over time that will settle," she said.
Scentre Group, which owns Westfield Bondi Junction, said it has increased the number of security guards across all of its centres.
"Waverley is a safe place, and it continues to be a safe place, [but] there are a whole lot of things we are still coming to terms with and it will take time," Ms Masselos said.
"While people may think they're okay, there'll be periods when they're not … be gentle with yourself and others."
The mayor encouraged people to return to the shopping centre to support retailers and "reclaim" a space which has been at the heart of the community for years.
Premier Chris Minns has announced $18 million will be set aside for an extensive coronial inquest into the attack.
A permanent memorial for the Bondi Junction attack is planned but is likely a couple of years away from being complete.
For many, the horror and tragedy of April 13 will likely still be as raw then as it is now.
