Ministers and government MPs were on tenterhooks at 11.30am today waiting for inflation figures that would have potent political implications.
When the numbers dropped the consumer price index showed a slight increase - indicating that inflation is sticking around.
But there had been gloomier predictions and "not bad news" is something akin to good news for a government battling cost of living pressures.
