Paperback. Zustand: Gut. 568 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - slightly rubbed and scuffed otherwise perfect condition - Tough, resolute, fearless, a born warrior, lover of Homer, drama and hunting, Alexander was also an impatient man of passionate ambitions, who understood the intense adventure of the unknown. -- When he died at thirty-two, his empire - from Greece to India - comprised two million square miles, and the vacuum he left was never properly filled. He had excelled as a general, he had stamped the face of Greek culture on the ancient East and he had created a myth that is as potent today as it was then. -- Robin Lane Fox's accessible and erudite life of Alexander searches through the mass of conflicting evidence and legend to focus on the living actuality of the man and his experience - 'It is tempting', he concludes, 'to see in Alexander the romantic's complex nature for the first time in Greek history.' Beautifully written, perceptive and fluent, it is a superb example of historical scholarship and psychological insight. -- LIST OF MAPS -- Greece, Macedonia and the Aegean -- Turkey and the approach to the battle of Issus Western Persian Empire 333/330 Alexander's route, September 330/327 -- North-West Frontier 327/326 -- Siege of Pir-Sar -- Route to the Hydaspes. Zustand: Gut. XI, 363 Seiten / p. altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - Janet Coleman's two-volume history of European political theorizing, from the ancient Greeks to the Renaissance, is the introduction for which many have been waiting. It treats some of the most influential writers considered by educated Europeans down the centuries to have helped construct their identity, their shared 'languages of politics' about the principles and practices of good government, and the history of European philosophy. It seeks to uncover and reconstruct the emergence of the 'state' and the various European political theories which justified it. -- In this volume, Coleman discusses the acknowledged great works of Greek, Roman and early Christian writers to show how the historical contexts in which certain ideas about ethics and politics became dominant, or fell from dominance, help to explain those ideas themselves. Throughout, she draws on recent scholarly commentaries written by specialists in philosophy, contemporary political theory, classical languages and cultures, and on ancient and early Christian history and theology. Janet Coleman shows that the arguments propounded by Greeks, Romans and early Christians can be seen as logical and coherent if we can grasp the questions they thought it important to answer. The author strikes a balance between trying to understand the philosophical cogency of ancient arguments on the one hand, and on the other, elucidating why historically situated Greeks, Romans and early Christians thought the ways they did about politics - and why we often think otherwise. -- The volume will meet the needs of students of philosophy, history and politics, proving to be an indispensable secondary source which aims to situate, explain and provoke thought about the major works of political theory likely to be encountered by students of this period and beyond. Saul, The Myth of the Great Depression 1873-1896 -- In this book, Professor S. B. Saul, who has himself written extensively on Britain's foreign trade and industrial development, examines the numerous contributions made in the last few years to the debate about the 'Great Depression' of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. -- The discussion has largely been conducted at a high level of sophistication both as regards the use of statistical techniques and the theoretical apparatus which has been applied to historical problems. This book lucidly summarises the literature and the statistics and puts the arguments in readily understandable terms, while at the same time not neglecting to preserve the essential analytical framework. -- The first part is concerned with changes in the level of prices and the various explanations which have been put forward, giving more emphasis to monetary explanations than has currently been fashionable. -- Then follows a discussion of trends in employment, real wages, the terms of trade and fluctuations in agriculture. Finally Professor Saul analyses the debate over the nature and timing of the declining rate of growth of industrial output. -- The author puts forward his own assessment of the period. He suggests that the conventional period for the Great Depression, 1873-96, has no particular meaning nationally or internationally for any of the trends under discussion, and that it would be better if the phrase were banished from the literature altogether. Zustand: Gut. 253 Seiten / p. altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - The so-called Dark Ages-those centuries between the Romans' departure and the Norman conquest-are largely illuminated in English history through myths such as those of Arthur and Beowulf. We know of marauders and pillage, of the open-field system and feudalism, but our perception of this long crucial period in English history is indeed clouded. Professor Finberg presents a revolutionary new vision of Anglo-Saxon England, from the development of the disparate kingdoms of the sixth century to the England of Arthur and thus to the secure monarchy of Edward the Confessor. Zustand: Gut. First Edition. X, 109 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Leopold von Ranke ( 1795-1886 ) , generally recognized as the founder of the school of modern critical historical scholarship, and Jacob Burckhardt ( 1818-1897 ) , the great Swiss proponent of cultural interpretation, are fathers of modern history - giants of their time who continue to exert an immense influence in our own. They are usually seen as contrasts, Ranke as representative of political history and Burckhardt of cultural history. In five essays, each flowing gracefully into the next, the distinguished historian Felix Gilbert shows that such contrasts are oversimplifications. Despite their interest in different aspects of the past, Ranke's and Burckhardt's views arose from common elements in the first half of the nineteenth century, the time in which they grew up and in which their first master-works attracted such wide attention. This concise volume clarifies the beginnings of history as an autonomous discipline, while at the same time forcing us to examine our own views on basic questions in historical scholarship. -- In the case of Ranke, relating his work to his times counteracts the current tendency to disregard the difference between the historical concepts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. By focusing on this difference, Gilbert emphasizes the originality and novelty of Ranke's ideas about history. Although Burckhardt is often portrayed as an intellectually lonely figure, this book reveals the importance of relating his thought to the intellectual trends of his time. Attention to this relationship discloses the development of his concept of cultural history from its beginnings in the Constantine through the famous Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy to the last of his masterpieces in cultural history, The Greek Cultural History. Broschiert / Paperback. Zustand: Gut. 239 Seiten / p. Leichte Randläsuren, Papierbedingt gebräunt, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / Light edge wear, paper browned, otherwise perfect condition - During the period covered by this absorbing book, the impact of the armed forces and their demands on society changed radically. Armies and navies became larger and more expensive. The role of the state in raising, organizing, equipping and paying them grew enormously, as the military entrepreneur who had been important in the first decades of the period receded into the background. Increasing state control meant a slow improvement in discipline. Indiscriminate plunder and wanton destruction became less the norm, the soldier less feared. In some respects, moreover, war had a limited effect in stimulating economic progress and growth. In much of central and eastern Europe, however, the situation differed fundamentally from that in the west. In Russia and Prussia the harsh imperatives of the quest for military strength were supremely important in moulding society as a whole and giving it a distinctive character. -- Professor Anderson, drawing on a wide range of materials in a number of languages, discusses and analyses these developments. His emphasis throughout is on social change and the role played in it by war, rather than on military history in the conventional sense of battles and campaigns. XIV, 274 Seiten / p. altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - Gabrielle Spiegel presents an essential new collection of key articles that examine the current status of the debate over the "linguistic turn", and attempt to rethink the practice of history in light of its implications. These are writings that operate within the framework of the linguistic turn, yet seek to move beyond its initial formulation and reception. -- The introduction offers a synoptic overview of the last twenty-five years of theoretical analysis concerning historical writing, with a critical examination of the key concepts and positions that have been in debate. The collection traces the emergence of "practice theory" as a possible paradigm for future historical interpretation concerned with questions of agency, experience and the subject. -- The chapters are written by a mix of critical thinkers and practicing historians and are presented alongside clear and thorough editorial material. Complex ideas at the forefront of historical practice are revealed and made accessible to students, while for their teachers and other historians this new survey is an indispensable and timely read. -- Contributors to this volume are: Marshall Sahlins, Mark Bevir, Michel de Certeau, Elizabeth Deeds Ermarth, Gareth Stedman-Jones, Joan Scott, Andreas Reckwitz, William H. Zustand: Gut. 221 S. / p. Einband und Schnitt leicht berieben, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / Binding and cut slightly rubbed, otherwise impeccable condition - Seven years ago, Elie Wiesel offered us Souls on Fire, a collection of portraits and legends describing the Hasidic Masters who revitalized Judaism with their joyous and profound faith in God and man. Writing on the front page of The New York Times Book Review, Charles Silberman joined critics across the country in hailing Wiesel as "one of the great writers of our generation" and praising the book as "a work of genius and of art.Souls on Fire should be read by. every thinking human being." -- Somewhere a Master is the long-awaited sequel to that masterpiece. Once again, Elie Wiesel brings us back into the world of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, an age of bloodshed and overturned altars, a time not unlike our own, to tell how a handful of remarkable rabbis helped their people overcome despair, hopelessness, and isolation with joy and simple faith. All disciples of the same man, the charismatic Baal Shem Tov, each sought and found his own way to turn Jewish solitude into sanctuary. -- Through his superb retelling of their legends, Elie Wiesel reveals their portraits: Barukh of Medzibozh had his anger, Moshe-Leib of Sassov his compassion, the "Seer of Lublin" his melancholic visions; Naphtali of Ropshitz had his humor, Pinhas of Koretz his simple wisdom, and the rabbis of Worke their silence. Some accepted fame and riches, and others shunned them; some distrusted their own powers, others welcomed them; some were gentle, others tempestuous. All had an extraordinary ability to inspire faith and joy in their followers. -- "And yet, and yet," writes Wiesel, "all these great spiritual leaders and guides who somehow, somewhere, managed to move so many others to joy and ecstasy often seemed to struggle with melancholy and at times even with the darkest despair. What was this sadness they had to engage in combat - and why?" -- It is Elie Wiesel's unique gift to make the lives and tales of these great teachers as compelling now as they were in a different time and place. In the great tradition of Hasidism itself, he leaves us to struggle with questions of morality and commitment and provides truths that can be pondered for a lifetime. Zustand: Gut. 149 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - ATLANTIC HISTORY -- is a newly and rapidly developing field of historical study. Bringing together elements of early modern European, African, and American history - their common, comparative, and interactive aspects - Atlantic history embraces essentials of Western civilization, from the first contacts of Europe with the Western Hemisphere to the independence movements and the globalizing industrial revolution. In these probing essays, Bernard Bailyn explores the origins of the subject, its rapid development, and its impact on historical study. » -- He first considers Atlantic history as a subject of historical inquiry - how it evolved as a product of both the pressures of post-World War II politics and the internal forces of scholarship itself. He then outlines major themes in the subject over the three centuries following the European discoveries. The vast contribution of the African people to all regions of the West, the westward migration of Europeans, pan-Atlantic commerce and its role in developing economies, racial and ethnic relations, the spread of Enlightenment ideas - all are Atlantic phenomena. -- In examining both the historiographical and historical dimensions of this developing subject, Bailyn illuminates the dynamics of history as a discipline. Zustand: Gut. XXV, 264 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - How is historical knowledge produced? And how do silence and forgetting figure in the knowledge we call history? Taking us through time and across the globe, David William Cohen's exploration of these questions exposes the circumstantial nature of history. His investigation uncovers the conventions and paradigms that govern historical knowledge and historical texts and reveals the economic, social, and political forces at play in the production of history. -- Drawing from a wide range of examples, including African legal proceedings, German and American museum exhibits, Native American commemorations, public and academic debates, and scholarly research, Cohen explores the "walls and passageways" between academic and nonacademic productions of history. -- Through such an array of fascinating studies, Cohen demonstrates how conventions of research, interpretation, exposition, and argument influence historical writing and debates about the past. Close interrogation of these conventions allows one to achieve a more powerful reading of the past encompassing events, lives, and processes and also the frames of interpretation and representation through which the past is known. Zustand: Gut. VII, 104 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - "Cleopatra": kohl and vipers, barges and thrones, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. We have long been schooled in tbe myth of the Egyptian ruler. Michel Chauveau combines his knowledge of Egyptian sources with judicious use of classical materials to produce an authoritative biography of Cleopatra, the woman and queen, seen in the light of the turbulent era in which she lived. -- Cleopatra VII reigned in Egypt between 51 and 30 b.c.e. Her primary goal as a ruler was to restore over the eastern Mediterranean the supremacy of the Lagides, the dynasty of Macedonian origin of which she herself was a descendant. We know the queen best from Greek and Latin sources, though these must be used with caution because of their bias. Understandably enough, they reflect not only matters of interest to Romans, but also the propaganda that Octavian used against the queen during his struggles with Mark Antony. Zustand: Gut. 324 Seiten / p. altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - In uncovering the roots of modernism, a master historian shows us a hidden side of the Victorian era, the role of the bourgeois as reactionaries, revolutionaries, and middle-of-the-roaders in the passage of high culture toward modernism. -- "In the Victorian decades, the name bourgeois was at once a term of reproach and a source of self-respect." So Peter Gay opens his newest and perhaps most surprising work. For the Victorians we meet in this volume are not the stodgy, complacent characters of drawing-room comedy. They are instead a varied crowd, from the capitalists in the top tier of the bourgeoisie eager to be recognized as gentlemen or, better yet, dubbed as nobility, to those at the bottom of the pile, the clerks and craftsmen mortally afraid of sinking into the mass of the proletariat. Anxiety pervades their lives. Driven by their concern to advance up the social pyramid or at least to maintain the status they have achieved, these Victorians maneuvered through decades marked by frequent shifts in taste, some seeking safety in traditional styles, others braving convention. -- Many of the individuals in this richly peopled narrative turn on their own class, none more wittily or bitterly than Gustave Flaubert; others celebrate their success, whether in Manchester or Munich or Manhattan, by sponsoring symphony orchestras or founding museums; still others become cultural hunters and gatherers, turning their newly acquired fortunes to the private accumulation of art, ranging from the "safe" works of the old masters to the startling innovations of the Impressionists. -- The stage is thus set for the explosion of modernism. Many of the late Victorians were drawn to a subversive avant-garde of artists, composers, and writers, including such shapers of twentieth-century culture as Cezanne, Picasso, Stravinsky, Shaw, Ibsen, and Zola. -- Pleasure Wars holds many other surprises and delights in its searching inquiry into the ideas and sensibilities that dominated Victorian culture. No one reading this concluding volume of Peter Gay's magnificent réévaluation of the nineteenth century will ever again use the term Victorian as a synonym for dull. Cloth covered. Zustand: Gut. Second Printing. XVI., 432 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - slightly rubbed otherwise perfect condition - FOREWORD -- Knowledge, not personal experience, should guide the judge, Plato : observes in The Republic. The tendency to carry over into medieval studies the analytical method and personal reaction appropriate to the discussion of contemporary writing is gratifying evidence of the continuity of human experience. We have come far since 1930 in recognizing the subtlety and effectiveness of pieces once regarded as naive or grotesque. But interest in criticism cannot obscure the implacable need for knowledge in interpreting medieval literature knowledge of languages, of history, of texts, and of the tools of scholarship. -- This volume is intended as a guide through a small part of this vist body of knowledge. The pervasiveness of the Latin Christian culture makes the study of medieval literature to a considerable extent the study of variation from a norm. Philosophical concepts and the themes of lyrics, romances, and dramas cannot be understood in one vernacular without reference to the others. The need to know both the primary works and the scholarship of Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, German, English, and Celtic places a heavy burden on the medievalist. The fundamental purpose of this collection has been to lighten this burden by bringing together between the covers of a single volume authoritative surveys of scholarship on the major Western European medieval literatures. -- MEDIEVAL LATIN LITERATURE -- Albert C. Zustand: Gut. X, 241 Seiten / p., Beilage. Knick in Cover, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / Crease in cover, otherwise perfect condition - Beilage / supplement: Rezension / review - Since before recorded history, people have congregated near water. But as growing populations around the globe continue to flow toward the coasts on an unprecedented scale and climate change raises water levels, our relationship to the sea has begun to take on new and potentially catastrophic dimensions. The latest generation of coastal dwellers lives largely in ignorance of the history of those who came before them, the natural environment, and the need to live sustainably on the worlds shores. Humanity has forgotten how to live with the oceans. -- In The Human Shore, a magisterial account of more than 100,000 years of seaside civilization, John R. Gillis recovers the coastal experience from its origins among the people who dwelled along the African shore to the bustle and glitz of today's megacities and beach resorts. He takes readers from the possible coastal location of the Garden of Eden to the communities that existed along beaches, bays, and bayous since the beginning of human society to the crucial role played by coasts during the age of discovery and empire. An account of the mass movement of whole populations to the coasts in the last half-century brings the story of coastal life into the present. -- Along the way, Gillis addresses humankind's changing relationship to the sea from an environmental perspective, laying out the history of the making and remaking of coastal landscapes - the creation of ports, the draining of wetlands, the introduction and extinction of marine animals, and the invention of the beach - while giving us a global understanding of our relationship to the water. Learned and deeply personal, The Human Shore is more than a history: it is the story of a space that has been central to the attitudes, plans, and existence of those who live and dream at land's end. Zustand: Gut. X, 685 Seiten / p., Abb. altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - "War," exclaimed Thomas Mann as the European powder keg exploded in 1914, "is purification, liberation, and an enormous hope." His was not the only voice edged with eagerness for battle. For nearly a hundred years, aggression had lurked beneath the surface of bourgeois culture, emerging occasionally to split the social order into insiders and outsiders. The Victorians, like members of other cultures, gave themselves permission to ridicule, bully, patronize, and exploit individuals and classes, races and nations they deemed to be inferior. But they also sought civilized rationales for their conduct, whether in the hunt for profits from new commercial ventures or for power in the political arena or for dominance over new movements that were bringing women out from domesticity. -- But that is only part of the story. What makes Peter Gay's Victorian bourgeois so fascinating is that they debated everything - quite aggressively. While majorities clung to the death penalty or the right to mete out corporal punishment, an increasingly vocal minority attacked these time-honored forms of aggression and denounced them as pathological. While many found it convenient to manipulate evolutionary theories in order to justify aggressive conduct at home and abroad, others, including Darwin's most authoritative interpreter, Thomas H. Huxley, argued the other side of the coin. Everything from domestic arrangements to women's rights, higher education, the nature of humor, and the limits of violence in sports was open to discussion. -- With the same sweep and authority that marked his best-selling Freud: A Life for Our Time, Peter Gay here takes us on a remarkable journey through an age of belief-shaking new ideas, inventions, discoveries. Figures bigger than life come into a new perspective. That self-appointed guardian of righteousness, Theodore Roosevelt, appears as the incarnation of bourgeois aggression at work in his lust for competition, fashionable racial attitudes, and manliness. Yet he stands at the same time as an advocate for transforming aggression into an instrument of democratic politics. Equally nuanced is Peter Gay's portrait of Otto von Bismarck: the savage battler against reform who was also a cool diplomat, ready to use violence when necessary and to oppose it when possible. -- In pursuing the great Victorian debate over aggression, Peter Gay brings new light to familiar themes, and introduces themes that historians of the nineteenth century have so far evaded: the shifting relations of male to female writers, the uses of humor as a form of aggression, and constructive possibilities of aggression in the enterprise of winning the great battles against nature. In revealing the interplay between aggression, its employment and its control, and historical change, Peter Gay boldly advances themes first adumbrated by Sigmund Freud in Civilization and Its Discontents, but with a wealth of historical detail that makes for a remarkably fresh portrait of the Victorian age. During the period of almost thirty years which separates the first of these essays from the most recent, our knowledge and understanding of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - the Early Modern period, as it has now come to be called - have undergone a profound transformation as new areas of inquiry have been opened up, and the insights acquired from disciplines other than history have been brought into play. I count myself particularly fortunate to have embarked on historical research and writing at a moment of such intellectual vitality and ferment, when it appeared, especially in the wake of Braudel's great work on the Mediterranean, that the whole of Early Modern European history was ripe for rethinking. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - A portrait of a world on the brink of annihilation - and a new and disturbing interpretation of the collapse of European Jewish civilisation even before the Nazi onslaught. -- As 1930s Europe spiralled towards the Second World War, the continent's Jews faced an existential crisis that was as much the result of internal decay as of external attack. The problem was not just Nazism: the greater part of Europe was, for Jews, being transformed into a giant concentration camp. Unlike most accounts, this book focuses squarely on the Jews themselves rather than their persecutors and demonstrates that, contrary to received wisdom, there was a growing awareness by Jews that they stood on the edge of an abyss. -- On [he Eve recaptures the sorrows and glories of the last phase of the European Jews' 2,000-year history. It explores their hopes and anxieties, social relations and intellectual creativity, values and institutions, literature and music - everything that made life meaningful and bearable for them. Wasserstein introduces a cosmopolitan array of characters: political leaders, boxers, rabbis, Zionists, housewives, businessmen, beggars, comedians - and children without a future. The geographical range is enormous, from Vilna ('Jerusalem of the North'] to Amsterdam,Vienna, Warsaw and Paris, taking in the Judeo-Espagnol-speaking stevedores of Salonica and the Yiddish-language collective farms of Soviet Ukraine and Crimea. -- Based on vast research, written with compassion and empathy, and enlivened by dry wit, On the Eve paints a vivid and enlightening picture of the European Jews in their final hour. Zustand: Gut. XIX, 352 Seiten / p. altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - Literally thousands of annals, chronicles, and histories were produced in Italy during the Middle Ages, ranging from fragments to polished humanist treatises. This book is composed of a set of ease studies exploring the kinds of historical writing most characteristic of the period. We might expect a typical medieval chronicler to be a monk or cleric, but the chroniclers of communal and Renaissance Italy were overwhelmingly secular. Many were jurists or notaries whose professions granted them access to political institutions and public debate. The mix of the anecdotal and the cosmic, of portents and politics, is what makes these writers so engaging to read. While chroniclers may have had different reasons to write and often very different points of view, they shared the belief that knowing the past might explain the present. Moreover, their audiences usually shared the worldview and civic identity of the historians, so these texts are glimpses into deeper cultural and intellectual contexts. Seen more broadly, chronicles are far more entertaining and informative than narratives. They become part of the very history they are describing. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - very good condition - Contextualizing Persecution, Conceptualizing the Martyr -- "For the bird of the air shall betray thy voice": Informing and Apprehending -- "To pray, to curse, and write letters": The Martyrdom of Prison -- "In the hands of Caiaphas": Interrogations and Trials -- "Whither goest Thou?": The Execution - This work examines the stages by which religious dissidents were persecuted by Tudor monarchs across the 16th century, and the means by which these dissidents counteracted authorities. During each stage of persecution, many dissidents were able to elude capture, counter-interrogate their inquisitors, use time in prison to write letters and prepare for death, and exploit their own executions to forge a final drama of suffering and redemption before a large, public audience. Enforcement was always dependent upon cooperation from the public and local officials, which made successful persecution uncertain at best. This text explores the details of this system of enforcement, and the means by which it was subverted. It also discusses larger questions concerning obedience and disobedience, tolerance and intolerance, and the dynamics of martyrdom. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
