Key statistics

The March 2024 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

  • Fell 0.4% month-on-month.
  • Rose 0.8% compared with March 2023.
  • In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell 0.4% in the March quarter 2024.

An additional release on 7 May 2024 has seen the inclusion of more detailed results for the March 2024 reference period. Additional timeseries spreadsheets have been published, including; state by industry results, state by industry sub-group results, March quarter 2024 turnover volumes, and online sales.

Upcoming changes to Retail Trade, Australia release schedule

From the May 2024 reference month onwards, Retail Trade, Australia will move to a new single release schedule with the full suite of statistics generally made available 22 working days following the end of the reference period.

Food retailing

Food retailing rose 0.9% ($122.4m) in March, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Household goods retailing

Household goods retailing fell 1.4% (-$79.5m) in March, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing fell 4.3% (-$133.7m) in March, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Department stores

Department stores fell 1.6% (-$31.6m) in March, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Other retailing

Other retailing fell 0.3% (-$15.6m) in March, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services fell 0.2% (-$13.3m) in March, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Online retailing

Total online retailing sales were $3,971.8m in March 2024, in seasonally adjusted terms. Seasonally adjusted online sales fell 0.9 per cent (-$36.5m), following a rise of 1.0 per cent ($39.3m) in February 2024. Seasonally adjusted through-the-year sales are up 4.0 per cent ($152.5m). 

Original online sales in March 2024 rose 5.3 per cent ($186.0m).  

In March 2024, food online sales were $1,216.3m and non-food online sales were $2,755.6m, in seasonally adjusted terms. Food sales fell 0.8 per cent (-$10.3m) whilst non-food fell 0.9 per cent (-$26.1m), seasonally adjusted. 

In original terms, the proportion of online food retailing sales to total food retailing fell from 6.2 per cent to 6.1 per cent. The proportion for online non-food retailing sales to total non-food retailing fell from 16.7 per cent to 16.6 per cent. 

In original terms, the proportion of online sales to total retailing fell from 10.7 per cent to 10.5 per cent. The proportion of online sales to total retailing remains unchanged compared to the same time last year.

Quarterly retail turnover

Per capita retail volumes

Retail volumes on a per capita basis fell for the 7th straight quarter, down 1.0% (-$36.7m) with retail spending on a per person basis down 3.6% (-$136.6m) compared to this time last year.

Retail turnover per capita is now down to its lowest level since the September quarter 2021 having peaked in the June quarter 2022. Retail volumes per capita are down 5.7% (-$219.9m) since the June quarter 2022 peak.

07/05/2024 - As advertised in the main release of this publication on 30 April 2024, the time series spreadsheets for tables 5 through to 23 are now available under the Data Downloads section. This includes:

  • March monthly results for State by Industry Subgroup, Completely Enumerated (large) and Sample (small) businesses, and Online Retail Turnover. 
  • March quarter 2024 results, available in tables 5 through to 10. Please note that the quarter results are reflective of changes to the monthly seasonally adjusted series noted in survey impacts and changes above.

Methodology

Scope

This publication presents estimates of the value of turnover of retail trade for Australian businesses. This includes all employing retail trade businesses who predominantly sell to households.

Retail Business Survey

Collection method

The survey includes about 700 large businesses and 2,700 smaller businesses selected by random sample.

The survey is conducted monthly primarily by telephone interview. A small number of questionnaires are mailed.

Concepts, sources and methods

Turnover includes:

  • retail sales
  • online sales
  • wholesale sales
  • takings from repairs, meals & hiring of goods
  • commissions from agency activity

Businesses are classified in terms of the retail industry group and subgroup it mainly operates in.

History of changes

GST was included in turnover from 2000.
