Krishna: A Sourcebook Paperback – July 2 2007
by
Edwin F. Bryant
(Author)
In the West Krishna is primarily known as the speaker of the Bhagavad Gita. But it is the stories of Krishna's childhood and his later exploits that have provided some of the most important and widespread sources of religious narrative in the Hindu religious landscape. This volume brings together new translations of representative samples of Krishna religious literature from a variety of genres -- classical, popular, regional, sectarian, poetic, literary, and philosophical.

Great bAlance of contextualizing and translations. Included Krishna traditions from a number of regions and the differences came through. Uses specifics to give meaning to generalities. I recommend it to all as a portal to enjoying g more Devotional Indian poetry, painting, and music. Appreciated authors who used words in the original language showing nuances by translation of context.

A useful book for understanding Vaishnavism in medieval India
Reviewed in India on April 6, 2015Verified Purchase
A good book on the most widely worshiped Hindu God, Lord Krishna. Helpful in understanding the Bhakti movement of medieval India. Of special significance is Neelima Shukla-Bhatt's essay on Narasimha Mehta. Useful for students interested in the practice of Vaishnavism in medieval India.
