David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition Hardcover – Illustrated, 11 Oct. 2013

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 68 ratings

In the past decade, having returned to England after years on the California coast, David Hockney has focused his attention on both landscapes and portraits, all the while maintaining his fascination with digital technology. The resulting work is a fanfare of colour and light, ranging in dimension from billboard- to letter-size, and is the basis for a thrilling new exhibition that promises to become one of the most popular in recent memory. This lush and impeccably produced catalogue features more than 100 full-colour works of art from museum collections and Hockney's private studio, including such major new works as The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate Wood, The Bigger Message, and Bigger Yosemite. It also includes multiple-image galleries (spread over gatefolds) of some of his iPad drawings and self-portraits, plus film stills from the artist's "Cubist" movies. Hockney's own insight into this latest chapter of his career is found across the book's pages and is accompanied by thoughtful commentary by renowned critic Lawrence Weschler and art historian Sarah Howgate.

Review

...this is the perfect gift for Hockneyphiles. --Brian Sewell, Essential Art Books of 2013, The Evening Standard (London)

The exhibition catalogue throbs with vivid colour, yet some of its most beautiful pages reproduce charcoal sketches Hockney has made in the last year, chronicling spring's arrival in eloquent black-and-white --Sotherbys, November 2013

David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition (Prestel) has wonderful images of the artist s new (2013) charcoal sketches of the arrival of spring in Yorkshire, and also several poignant essays citing Hockney's desire to encourage people to be more active in your looking . . . you feel so much more free. Which is another way of saying, you feel more alive. --Caroline Daniel, Editor, FT Weekend, Books of the Year, 29th November 2013

Really delightful, stacked full of high quality reproductions in a good format, full of the clear-sighted delight in his surroundings, especially in the countryside of E. Yorkshire, displayed with the extraordinarily high aesthetic ability and relaxed enjoyment that so charactarises his mature work.

A fantastic book! beautifully done coverage of the largest exhibition that the Royal Academy has ever produced for a single artist! His work is stunning and watch his youtube videos, He is a delightful character and explorer of what it means to look and how to translate that onto a canvas. H was an innovator in the late 70s and is still questing and inquiring into the limits of visual language today. Super happy with this purchase despite it taking 6 times as long to get it than was indicated by the listing.
