This fine book should be regarded as the seminal work on the topic. Levine has an excellent grasp of the strategic picture of this controversial episode in the war, and illustrates it well with minute detail including the characters of the air commanders, the conduct of individual raids and tactics, analysis of the ethical issues, the aircraft and weapons, and a good final chapter studying the mistakes by all sides in the bombing campaign.
Quite simply, probably the best book ever written on the subject and one that is unlikely to be bettered for some time to come,if ever.
Levine's final conclusion, that the Allies finally if belatedly hit on the way to destroy the German war economy by striking at oil and transport infrastructure - but did so just as their armies were rolling across Germany - is convincingly delivered.
History at its best, presented with engrossing detail. Essential reading for all those interested.
