The Alchemist Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 148,560 ratings

A special 25th anniversary edition of the extraordinary international bestseller, including a new Foreword by Paulo Coelho.

Combining magic, mysticism, wisdom and wonder into an inspiring tale of self-discovery, The Alchemist has become a modern classic, selling millions of copies around the world and transforming the lives of countless readers across generations.

Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams.

"One of my favourite books is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and I just believe that…I can create whatever I want to create. If I can put my head on it right, study it, learn the patterns…I feel very strongly that we are who we choose to be." WILL SMITH

"When I'm on the set with young actors and sometimes you meet people in life who you feel they are a little confused and they want to be re-centered, there are two books that I always recommend. One of them is Siddhartha, and the other is The Alchemist. RUSSELL CROWE

From the Back Cover

"My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky." Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams."

Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

A book everyone should read
I can see myself easily returning to read this book over and over again as you find even more nuggets of wisdom as your own journey unfolds. My book had 20 pages repeated, but I’m sure that was to keep me alert.

This was a joyful read because it wasn't a long book but more a short story of the journey in life one must take. I found the tales to be simply relatable and the underlying motto is if you live in the moment you will be better preserved for what ever you go through. You will not be focused on the future and not be dwelling on the past. Live in the moment and enjoy every moment. Good or bad its all part of your journey to find what ever your treasure may be.

This is an amazing book! If you are a bit of dreamer, an adventurer, then this is just for you! The journey of the protagonist is magical, innocent and metaphorical. As I read it, I relived my childhood, early adulthood and suddenly felt so alive!!! Yes, if the wisdom that is reflected in this book was with me 20 years ago, perhaps I would have had the courage to do things differently! Having said that, the book helps you realise that there is no right or wrong paths. Just live your dream..... An awesome read.

I'm 35 and enjoy reading fiction that has at least some kind of connection with reality, society or science. I had a few friends tell me how good this book is, but before fully trusting them, I should have considered that they are people who also enjoy reading biographies.
This book is consisted of 2 chapters, the first one being around 40 pages and the second is the remainder of the book. I had trouble staying interested in the book throughout the first chapter but had decided to finish reading it.The second chapter did have my attention but the end was such of a letdown, the whole book reminded me of a cheap telenovela.
This book could've been much better if it was written as short children's story, no more than 40 pages, as I believe someone with common sense and intellect is not interested in "Omens" and "Personal Legends"(The book's term for destiny).
Unless this book has been gifted to you or you pick it up from the library, in my opinion it is not worth buying it.

I can honestly say, I understand the hype. This was an easy read but at the same time full of life lessons and warnings. There's a lot to be learned from life's simplicities and often times they get over looked or ignored. Mainly because we think it can't be that simple and ignore it or we get too caught up in the hustle and bustle of what's familiar to venture out and search for something more. I hope to carry these lessons with me and will reread in a few years to see if I missed anything.
