Kahlil Gibran—poet, philosopher, and artist—was born in Lebanon in 1883 but spent his final twenty years of life living in the United States. The three books that compose this audiobook are collections of Gibran's aphorisms, parables, and poetic essays. The first book, The Prophet, was originally published in 1923 and is considered Gibran's masterpiece. It is written in prose poetry in twenty-eight parts, and deals with such topics as love, freedom, good and evil, religion, and death. It is a mystical and intensely subjective work, presenting the human soul as essentially noble and good. In The Forerunner, originally published in 1920, Gibran asserts that "nobody is to be blamed for our 'being' and 'having' but ourselves." Gibran makes it clear that we are our own destiny and not the toy of a blind fate. Finally, the titular entity of The Madman, originally published in 1918, is not literally mentally unbalanced; on the contrary, he is perfectly healthy. His madness is only in the eyes of others. Gibran asserts that we tend to be what society expects from us, even though these expectations could be detrimental for the development of our self-identity. Oftentimes, we veil our true selves with masks out of fear of being ridiculed by others.- Print length1 pages

"Free of dogma, free of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphorisms a twentieth-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of other readers already have."
-- "Amazon.com, editorial review"About the Author
Kahlil Gibran (18831931), an artist, poet, and writer, was born in Lebanon and spent much of his productive life in the United States. He is known in the English-speaking world primarily for The Prophet, a book of twenty-six poetic essays published in 1923 which achieved cult status. He remains one of the worlds bestselling poets, second only to Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu. About the authors
Kahlil Gibran: full Arabic name Gibran Khalil Gibran, (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer of the New York Pen League.
Kahlil Gibran was born in the town of Bsharri in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Ottoman Empire (north of modern-day Lebanon), to Khalil Gibran and Kamila Gibran(Rahmeh). As a young man Kahlil emigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Laozi.

Mark began writing on an old algae-encrusted backyard hammock. He was already in his mid-forties and the thought of becoming an author had never crossed his mind before that moment. Many believe the thought has still never occurred to him. His zany imagination and utter laziness prodded him toward fiction, where although he has five published books, his apparent lack of talent enables him to enjoy absolute obscurity to this day.
Mark’s second passion is music. He attended Florida State university sometime during the late 1800’s, receiving a Master Degree in Trumpet Performance. He performed professionally for five years before entering the business world. Nowadays, Mark finds listening to music while writing the nexus of focus and inspiration.
Mark loves God, beer, and his many two and four legged pets.

Giving as part of a wedding gift with the section on “marriage” bookmarked …instead of a card …which would probably have cost the same price.
I've recommended this book to many of my family and friends, as it's simplicity and common sense is something I feel people should strive towards. If you're thinking of reading this book, stop what you're doing, buy it now, and read it in one sitting.
It will most likely change your outlook on a lot of things if it's your first read through - and galvanize your thoughts if it's a multiple reading.
