About the author
Kieron Gillen is a British writer, journalist and critic best known for his work in comics and his previous work in entertainment journalism.
Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.
At Marvel, he's written runs on books including THE UNCANNY X-MEN, THOR, YOUNG AVENGERS, IRON MAN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, STAR WARS, DOCTOR APHRA and DARTH VADER.
Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.
He is working on other things.
In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.
He once played records for DMC to rap over.

I have to say I loved the story! Not only is the child Loki a fun and captivating protagonist, but he is an imaginative and still faithful interpretation of the character. Here is the trickster, the mischief-maker, of mythology that is not yet an outright villain. And, Gillen perfectly captures the voice of a young teen boy. Certainly Loki would be as smart-ass, but so would any other 13-15 year old boy (about the age I'd judge the character to be). Add to this the fact that everyone in Asgard remembers the previous incarnation of Loki, that nearly destroyed the world, and this boy's life is challenging to say the least. In Volume 1, Loki learns how he came to be reincarnated (a clever twist worthy of a god), but also goes on an adventure to save not only Asgard, but the older brother who is the only person who does not hate him - Thor.
The art in the book is vibrant and stunning. I love how the characters are rendered, and the backgrounds are rich and detailed. The art not only complemented the story, it helped with clarity and flow. The volume also concluded with a "recap" of the Thor storyline that lead to the events of JiM, V1. This was a nice addition to help newcomers find their footing. This book is a good place for a newcomer to comics to dive into the Marvel universe, and especially for fans of Loki. But be prepared to continue the investment. I enjoyed this so much I immediately ordered volumes 2-4. And, it hooked me enough that I have several Thor omnibus collections on my wishlist, as well as Siege . I think it won't be long before I have to add another bookshelf just for my Marvel graphic novels. Highly recommended!
And here is where it begins.
If you dig bright-colored spandex and deeply embedded cliché, this is not the book for you. If you always loved the Norse myths (even if Thor didn't exactly float your boat) and if you ever appreciated such well-crafted writing that the reader quite literally becomes a part of the story, then you are going to love this book. Kieron knows what we, the readers, want and he gives it to us with a sly wink and a smile. And then completely rips the carpet from beneath our feet. To quote Huey Freeman: Vision? What do you know about my vision? My vision would turn your world upside-down, tear asunder your illusions and send the sanctuary of your own ignorance crashing down around you. Ask yourself... are you really ready to see that vision?
If you are ready, pick up this book.
If you are not ready, pick up this book anyway. Seldom has the graphic novel medium been used to such awesome effect. It will change the way you look at comics.

In the early sixties JIM was an anthology book in which The Mighty Thor debuted and later starred. It has been revived occasionally and so again one and a half years ago when Thor was restarted with #1 and JIM took on the numbering of the old title. Starring was... Loki, the Asgardian God Of Mischief.
During the "Siege" arc in Thor (SPOILERS if you have not read this) Loki betrayed Asgard once more but ultimately sacrificed himself for the realm. But he did not really die (like so many times before) and was revived as a young teenager.
And now Gillen takes him and makes him the feature character of his run on Journey into Mystery. This trade collects #622 to 626 and is a tie-in to the company-wide crossover "Fear Itself" of 2011. But you can read it standalone without real problems. The art is done very decently by Doug Braithwaite, also the colors of Ulises Arreola shine although not litterally the mood of the story being very, well, hellish.
What is outstanding is the subtle characterization of the lead character. This is really Loki the Trickster God, but it is not the almost pure evil guy you know from hundreds of attemptions to get Thor or Odin down, although he is not really a good person, but you can sympathize with him. Interesting also how Gillen gets new facets out of known supporting cast personnel, f.i. voluminous Volstagg. And the plot does not stand behind: there is scheming, there is vengeance, there is sacrifice. And there are twists and turns that did not make me stop wondering. The collection ends with a cliff hanger and I am eagerly seeing forward to the next chapter. Recommended!
