Marshall: A Statesman Shaped in the Crucible of War Hardcover – January 1, 2014
by
Rachel Yarnell Thompson
(Author)
Rachel Yarnell Thompson's, "Marshall: A Statesman Shaped in the Crucible of Wa", begins with a sandy-haired, mischievous, and energetic boy, nurtured by his mother, judged and challenged by his father, and deeply loved by both. Thomas has taken Marshall from that fresh-faced youth's tentative and formative time to the intersection of national and world events where he soon proved his mettle as a leader. Combining extensive primary source material with secondary sources, Thompson's new biography presents an authoritative and superbly readable story of George C. Marshall's extraordinary journey.

It was a gift to a recent VMI graduate . Also, I personally know the author. She has written a very interesting book about a special man.

Know the author but that is not the reason we would highly recommend this book. Factual information, great photo, and a very interesting read. So worth purchasing and even giving as a gift.

George Marshall is perhaps the most underappreciated soldier/statesman in American history. He created, shaped and directed the American forces during World War II. Winston Churchill called him "the true organizer of our victory." As he prepared to go off to a well earned retirement, President Harry Truman called on him to continue serving the country as Secretary of State and later as Secretary of Defense. As Secretary of State, he conceived and implemented the Marshall Plan, which not only saved Western Europe from Communism, but also laid the basis for the European Union. In recognition of this achievement, he was award the Nobel Peace Prize, which had never before been awarded to a military man.
There had been several biographies written about him. One of the best is "Marshall: A Statesman Shaped in the Crucible of War," stands out . It was written by Rachel Thompson, the Historian for The George C. Marshall International Center. It is not only beautifully written; it also contains details not found elsewhere.;
