Must read for all healthcare professionals!!
5 Stars
Must read for all healthcare professionals!!
As a behavioral health researcher turned psychotherapist, I'm wary to hop on the bandwagon for every new health intervention fad. But the power of music is nothing new. The book shows us that the science is just catching up with what humans have always known intuitively to be true. Sometimes the most obvious interventions (like exercise) are the more powerful and, frustratingly, the least utilized by healthcare providers. I will approach the topic with more care in my work moving forward and the book gave me lots of ideas. I found Fleming's description of the work the NIH is doing to be quite exciting as well.

Can singing the National Anthem make your heart stronger? Maybe so. This is just one of the many revelations and insights about how music can make folks healthier and happier that Fleming has rounded up in this sprawling collection of short, easy-to-read essays. Most explore how scientists and doctors are harnessing the power music to create therapies for treating everything from heart and lung disease to depression, from chronic pain to Parkinson’s. Fleming is clearly an enthusiastic believer of all this, and, by bringing together the best thinkers and researchers, the book will likely make a believer of you. Music instead of drugs and surgery. Count me in. The academic nature of some of the articles is leavened by heartfelt contributions of well-known artists like Richard Powers, Rosanne Cash, Ann Patchett on how their lives have been affected by music. It's also filled with some fun facts. You might think it cool to have a chimp playing drums in your rock band, but it would be a disaster. Our fellow primates, like virtually every other animal on the planet, have no rhythm. (I’m glad I’m not alone.) With 41 essays over 558 pages, the book is daunting, but it’s well organized and Fleming’s introduction (“Overture”) provides a detailed road map of what’s to come. Readers can easily find what interests them and plunge right in.

I found this book to be fascinating ,insightful , and easily accessible . Each chapter stands on its own making it easy skip around . I especially enjoyed the chapter "Sounding Joy" about the transformative experience of music with blindness. I can't wait to hear about the results of the Singing Heart Pilot Study outlined in the chapter "Can Singing Touch the Heart." The chapter on "Music for Chronic Pain Management" was especially interesting and as a healthcare professional it is heartening to see music and the arts being integrated back into the care we deliver.

The impact of music on health has been known for some time, but this amazing book pulls together the research in recent years which explores and documents the extent of this connection. Each chapter contains eye opening information on this process. Music therapy has become much more than a feel good practice for end of life care. It has unlimited possibilities for everyone’s quality of life all their life.
