It's the classic work: revised and updated! Identify over 500 of the most collectible minerals quickly and easily with this fully photographed field guide. And this new reissue makes identification easier, with new cleavability ratings for each entry alongside the handy classifications based on streak colour, Mohs' hardness and specific gravity. A complete introductory discussion of mineral forms and properties explains the essential criteria for recognition, and each of the hundreds of minerals (from Ankerite to Zinwaldite) is accompanied by information on its fracture, luster, chemical formula, aggregates, distinguishing characteristics and localities.

My main “go to” source for years
Reviewed in the United States on 17 May 2024Verified Purchase
It provides a good basic intro to mineral classification (e.g., crystal systems) and basic mineral testing / identification (e.g., hardness, streak, specific gravity, flame test, etc.). The best part is that it catalogs a large set of major minerals by streak, hardness, and specific gravity providing a systematic, practical, and concise method of mineral identification well within the capabilities (and pocket book) of most any amateur collector. Each mineral listed comes with a technical description including, but not limited to, chemical composition, fracture, luster, where found, etc. and color photograph. If you are a hobby collector, this is a “must have” for your kit. If you are going to get just one book on minerals, this is it. I have used mine for years. Bought this one as a gift for my daughter who teaches 6th grade science.

Being a Civil Engineer and Engineering Geologist , I must say that this book is one of the most impressive texts that I have encountered , and I have read dozens of texts in the past and recently . I believe it covers more mineral species than any other book in its class . It would be a useful text for students of mineralogy and geology and even engineering students . Hobbyists would find it an excellent guide . The photographs and general quality of the book are excellent . I highly recommend it .
