Saturday's draw leaves Jaap Stam's Reading with nine points from eight games

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's late goal denied Hull City their first away win of the season at Reading.

Fraizer Campbell put the visitors in front with a cool finish from Seb Larsson's assist.

Former Tigers forward Sone Aluko should have levelled before the break but shot wide when presented with an open goal.

Royals goalkeeper Vito Mannone did well to stop Nouha Dicko making it 2-0 before sub Bodvarsson equalised from Aluko's through ball.

A draw does little to get either of these teams' seasons going, with both sitting six points off the play-off places.

The hosts had totally dominated possession but Dicko and Fikayo Tomori both went close to securing a vital win for Leonid Slutsky's side before Bodvarsson's late intervention.

The Royals, beaten play-off finalists in 2016-17, have scored just seven goals in their eight games so far this campaign.

Jaap Stam's men visit Millwall on Tuesday, while Hull host Preston.

Reading manager Jaap Stam said:

"We made it difficult for ourselves after conceding a goal like that. We needed to show more quality on the ball and, at 1-0 down, it was even harder to get back into the game.

"At times, we could have done better when in possession and in the choices we needed to make. But that sometimes happens in football.

"We fought very hard to get back into the game and I thought we deserved the equaliser and a point."

Hull head coach Leonid Slutsky said:

"Everybody is very disappointed because we had more chances to win and we controlled the match.

"We had clear chances, we hit the bar from a free-kick and it is really difficult to take. We worked very hard and we had patience as well.

"Is not winning away a mental problem? Yes, maybe. But a mental problem is difficult to research or change."
