Officials are urging Brits to check their wallets – as they may be holding onto a small fortune without realising.

Spare change that gets left on the side or down the crevices on your sofa may be more valuable than you realise. Hundreds of coins are being sought out by collectors for their rareness.

An expert has outlined which coins are highly desirable to the public. While these may seem insignificant in value, they could be highly sought after by collectors, potentially making them extremely valuable, reports Nottinghamshire Live.

Brits are being encouraged to rummage through their spare change for any coins that could lead to "take an early retirement" An expert known as the Coin Collector UK has highlighted three specific coins that together could fetch almost £130,000. In a TikTok video, he advised: "You can take an early retirement if you find these coins.”

Firstly, he spoke about the rarity of a 1933 penny coin: "One of these old pennies sold at auction for £127,000. The year you need to find is 1933. Less than 10 of these were ever produced. These are worth huge money with one selling for well over £100,000 pounds. And another for about £86,000.”

He then moved on to a 50p coin from 2011, which commemorated the 2012 London Olympics and contains a specific error that could make it worth a substantial sum. "The Olympic Aquatics coin can be worth £2,000 if you find the error," he explained.

"You need to check if the lines are covering the face like the ones on the rest of the coin. It's thought that only 500 were produced before they changed it to this design without the lines.", reports Lancs Live.

Coin enthusiasts, take note: if you possess a £2 coin from 2014 featuring Lord Kitchener and it lacks the inscription "two pounds" on the Queen's side, you might have a rare collector's item. An expert highlighted: "Finally, this Lord Kitchener £2, which you can find in your change can be worth £800. If yours doesn't say 'two pounds' at the bottom, then you are onto a winner. Only a handful of these have been found. This is called a mule era. So get looking for any of these coins in your change.”
